SAN DIEGO ? College of Charleston opened the 2006 season with a 3-1 win over San Diego State (1-3) here Wednesday night. In its first match ever with the San Diego State, the visiting Cougars handed the Aztecs a four-game loss (30-22, 27-30, 30-28, 30-25) in Peterson Gym.

“This was a good way to start the season,” said fourth year head coach Sherry Dunbar. “Anytime you can go into someone else’s house ? a big time school in a big conference ? and win, it’s a good thing.”

As a team, CofC hit a .270 clip, with junior middle blocker Tiffany Blum leading the way at .375.  Junior outside hitter outside hitter Deanna Patrick followed with a .250 hitting percentage.

Senior libero Marie Dobrenz led Charleston with 27 digs, followed by freshman outsider hitter Emily Sawin and junior outside hitter Alexis Lowes with 11 apiece.

“Our offense was inconsistent, but the defense played well,” added Dunbar.  “It was a bit of a roller coaster, but the energy and passing were good.”

The Cougars continue their California trip as they head to Fullerton to play Weber State, Binghamton and host Cal State-Fullerton in the Four Points Titan Classic Sept. 1-2.

“The competition will be similar.  We need to stay steady and keep improving.”
