North Florida 2, Georgia Southern 1
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- Georgia Southern sophomore Ashley Toussaint scored 1:47 into the match, but two North Florida goals later in the first half proved to be the difference in the Lady Ospreys’ 2-1 women’s soccer win Sunday afternoon.
Toussaint’s (Warner Robins, Ga.) first tally of the season came off a free kick from sophomore Michelle Carlson (Melbourne, Fla.).
After several shot attempts by the Lady Ospreys, Elizabeth Gowan scored the equalizer in the 28th minute to bring UNF back into the game.
In the 39th minute of play, the Lady Ospreys pulled ahead off a header by Lisa Taylor. She was assisted by Jessica Jowers.
North Florida held a 13-3 shot advantage, including a 9-1 edge in the first half.

Duke 1, Western Carolina 0
Durham, N.C. ? Despite being out shot 24-to-2 on the day, the Western Carolina Catamounts only allowed the 12th-ranked Duke Blue Devils one goal, falling 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
Western, who dropped to 0-2 on the young season, was playing its second opponent from the Atlantic Coast Conference in three days.
“For this to be the second match of the season and to be playing against the 12th-ranked team in the nation, I could not ask for more,” said second-year head coach Tammy DeCesare. “I felt our backs played great and our goalkeeping from Alesha (Row) was phenomenal. We created some legitimate chances, but overall this was a very respectable result.”
After opening the match with high intensity, the Blue Devils drew first blood at the 22:17 minute of the first half. Senior Rebecca Moros gained possession along the right side of the Catamount defense, turned up field and slipped past the WCU defender one-on-one. Just outside of the box, Moros sent a cross towards the middle of the field where her classmate, Sarah McCabe, redirected the pass from 15 yards out and found the lower left corner of the net for the goal.
Western, however, turned up the pressure in the latter stages of the first half despite not registering a shot on goal. At the 13:07 mark, junior Lauren Atkinson made a run on the Devil goal off a throw-in deep in Duke territory. However, the Duke keeper, Allison Lipsher, scooped up the long pass before Atkinson could get to it.
Then again, inside of three minutes to play, Western made a run as sophomore Buki Baruwa gathered a pass and maneuvered against two Blue Devil defenders, drawing a foul just to the left of the Duke goal. However, Atkinson’s free kick sailed over the box where the Devils cleared away from freshman Shannon Fowkes.
Duke resumed the assault at the outset of the second half with McCabe firing a point blank shot at the right side of the goal, but All-Southern Conference goalkeeper, senior Alesha Row, made a diving stab to make the save. Row recorded 10 saves on the day for the Catamounts, suffering her second loss of the season.
The Catamounts recorded their first shot on goal midway through the second half as Atkinson delivered an offering that dribbled wide right. Minutes later, Western had its best scoring opportunity of the match as redshirt freshman Rachael Shomper uncorked a shot that Lipsher gathered in for her only save of the match.
Inside the final 30 seconds of the match, the Cats mounted a final flurry, but the Devils’ defense cleared the ball out of bounds on two-straight occasions to preserve the win.
Western Carolina opens its home schedule this Friday, Sept. 1 as the Catamounts host directional rival, East Carolina, at 7:00 pm at the Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee.
Longwood 3, Wofford 2
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Two late goals, including the clincher in overtime, provided the Longwood women's soccer team a 3-2 victory over Wofford Sunday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville, Va.
The visiting Terriers held a 2-1 edge as regulation time neared its end; however, the Lancers' Aynsley Birkner scored off a Maddie Stevens assist for the equalizer with 88:47 showing on the clock to knot the score and force the extra time.
Tia Nardella, who tallied the hosts' first goal of the game, found Sarah Fening for the game winner at 95:00. Nardella had earlier found the back of the net for Longwood (1-1) at 67:32 off a Cassie Lynn assist.
Wofford (1-1) freshman Aubrey Thomson gave the Terriers an early 1-0 lead when fellow rookie Blair Green fed her a one-timer from the left side at 36:39. The goal and assist for both players were their first respective collegiate points.
Senior Jessica Connett, unassisted, then added Wofford's next score at 82:45 for her second goal in as many games. The two goals equal her single-season tallies from the past two seasons.
The Terriers held a 9-8 shot advantage and an 8-3 edge on corner kicks against the Lancers.
Wofford will return to action Saturday at Charleston Southern as part of the Big South/SoCon Challenge. It will mark the third-straight road game to open the campaign for the Terriers.
Old Dominion 4, Elon 0
ELON, N.C. -- Katie Watson and Shavon Knight each netted two goals to lead the Old Dominion Monarchs past the Elon Phoenix by a 4-0 margin in women’s soccer action from Rudd Field on Sunday afternoon. ODU improved to 2-0-0 while Elon dipped to 1-1-0.
Watson struck early for the Monarch, scoring 3:44 into the contest after she stole the ball from a Phoenix defender near the box, dribbled in and knocked home the shot. Watson scored her second goal of the afternoon when a cross from Knight deflected off an Elon defender and to her feet for the score in the 13th minute.
In the second half, Knight struck twice. The first of her two goals came when Watson fed a ball into the box past the diving Elon keeper and right to Knight for the score in the 58th minute. Knight’s final score came on a penalty kick in the 64th minute.

Chattanooga 3, Eastern Kentucky 1
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ? Sophomore Nikki Brannen and freshman Chelsea Hurst combined for a pair of first half goals to give the Lady Mocs a 3-1 win over Eastern Kentucky on a hot, humid Sunday afternoon at the North River Soccer Complex.
The duo paired up to put Chattanooga on the board at 18:31. Brannen, just a few feet in front of the goal, took a pass from Hurst on the right side and snuck it past the Colonel keeper at the line. Nearly 20 minutes later, Hurst raced down the right sideline and sent a pass across to Brannen in the left side of the box for what would eventually prove to be the difference in the game.
“Nikki has matured as a player this season,” Lady Mocs head coach J.D. Kyzer said. “Last year she made a lot of passes instead of shooting, but her growing confidence is allowing her to see the opportunities.”
In the second half, Hurst took a pass from freshman Whitney Landram and EKU keeper Christina Graul charged the play. Hurst sent the shot past the keeper toward an unprotected goal and the shot trickled into the back of the net and the Lady Mocs took a 3-0 lead with 79:13 gone in the game.
The Colonels got on the board on a corner kick a minute later. Everyone bunched up in front of the goal to receive the kick and Maddy Shumaker came away with the ball and took away the shutout, cutting Chattanooga’s lead to 3-1 at 79:52.
“Eastern Kentucky is going to shock a lot of people this year,” Kyzer said. “You can see that Coach [Lindsay] Basalyga knows what she’s doing.”
UTC’s senior keeper Stacey Matthiessen tallied six saves, playing all 90 minutes in goal while Graul notched four saves with one team save for Eastern Kentucky. The Lady Mocs outshot EKU 22-13.
“We possessed the ball the majority of the game today,” Kyzer said. “Scoring early can give you a lot of confidence, but on the other hand, it can make you sit back and relax too much. We played with a lot of heart out there.”
The Lady Mocs, 2-0, will host intrastate rival Tennessee-Martin Sunday, Sept. 3 at 2 p.m. at the North River Soccer Complex. Eastern Kentucky, 1-1, will take on the Kentucky Wildcats on Friday, Sept. 1 in Lexington, Ky.
