Former Furman Hurler and SoCon Pitcher of the Year Called Up to Majors

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Cleveland Indians have purchased the contract of former Furman All-America pitcher Tom Mastny from the AAA Buffalo Bisons, the club announced today. To make room on the 25-man roster for Mastny the Indians optioned RHP Edward Mujica to AAA Buffalo.

 

Mastny, 25, a 2003 Furman graduate, will wear uniform No. 47 for Cleveland when the Indians open a three-time home series against Detroit Monday night.

 

The 6-foot-5, 225-pound right-hander compiled a 2-1 record and 2.61 earned run average at Buffalo of the International League. In 24 relief appearances in Triple-A, he worked 38.0 innings and surrendered 25 hits, 11 earned runs, and 16 walks while striking out 46. Opponents have hit just .184 (25x136) against him this year, including right-handers, who are batting just .153 (13x85). He has not allowed a home run this year.

 

He began the year at Double-A Akron, where in 12 games he went 0-1 with a 1.09 ERA.

 

The Zionsville, Ind., native was tabbed 2003 Southern Conference Pitcher-of-the-Year and became the Paladins' first All-American after going 11-2 with an NCAA best 1.09 ERA while helping Furman to a school season record 32 wins, including victories over North Carolina State, South Carolina, and pair of triumphs over Clemson.

 

Following graduation, he became the second highest draft selection in Furman history when he was picked in the 11th round by the Toronto Blue Jays. He was traded by the Blue Jays to Cleveland in December of 2004.

 

In three-plus seasons of professional ball, Mastny has compiled a 28-10 record with a 2.20 ERA in 111 appearances (384.0 IP, 315 H, 94 ER, 108 BB, 397 K). He minor league experience includes stops at Auburn (N.Y.) of the New-York Penn League and Charleston (W.Va.) of the South Atlantic League.

 

Following his trade to Cleveland, he spent time at Kinston (N.C.) of the Carolina League and Akron (Ohio) of the Eastern League before being promoted to Buffalo on May 17.
