ATLANTA (AP) -- Jeff Kindel and Matt Wieters hit home runs and Kindel threw out a runner at the plate to back Blake Woods' 6 2-3 shutout innings as Georgia Tech beat College of Charleston 5-0 Friday in the opening game of the NCAA Super Regional.
Tech moved one win away from its third College World Series appearance. The Yellow Jackets swept in two straight games when hosting Super Regionals the last two years.
Wieters was 2-for-4 with the homer and a run-scoring single in the seventh. The sophomore was named most outstanding player of Tech's regional win by going 8-for-9 with three homers and six RBIs.
Wieters is 10-for-13 with seven walks, four homers and eight RBIs in four NCAA tournament games.
Kindel suffered a partial tear of his posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament last month. He was obviously favoring the knee after fielding a ball in left field in the second inning, but he stayed in the game and led off the bottom of the inning with his 12th homer to give Tech a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Kindel threw out Alex Garabedian at the plate as Garabedian tried to score from second on Ben Lasater's single.
The homer was the first run allowed by Cougars starter Nick Chigges since May 18.
Wieters' fifth-inning homer to right, his 14th, pushed the Yellow Jackets' lead to 2-0. He added a run-scoring single off reliever Quinn Monsma in the seventh for a 3-0 lead.
Wes Hodges drove in Whit Robbins with an eighth-inning single to left, and Luke Murton scored on Friddle's fielding error in left for a 5-0 lead.
Charleston outhit Tech 11-9 and had two or more baserunners in five innings.
In the second inning, Wood struck out Joey Friddle to end a threat with runners on second and third. In the fourth, Friddle hit an inning-ending fly ball to right with the bases loaded.
Wood gave up eight hits and one walk with six strikeouts. He was pulled with two outs and runners on first and third in the seventh inning, and reliever Brad Rulon ended the inning with a popout from Chris Campbell.
Ruhon struck out Lasater in the eighth to strand runners on first and third. Ruhon completed the shutout for his second save.
Chigges (11-2) gave up five hits and two runs with four walks in 6 1-3 innings in his first loss since Feb. 18.
The second game of the regional is scheduled for Saturday.
