MLB First-Year Draft Completed With a Dozen SoCon Picks

Georgia Southern's Dustin Evans and Everett Teaford were among three Southern Conference players picked on the first day of the MLB First-Year Player Draft.  Evans was drafted in the second round, while Teaford was grabbed in the 12th round.  Sandwiched between the two GSU picks was UNC Greensboro's Jermaine Mitchell, who was picked in the fifth round.

This year Evans rebounded from an elbow injury, in which he missed more than a month, to finish 5-3 with a 6.21 ERA. He started 11 of his 12 appearances, logging 58 innings. The junior right-hander gave up 67 hits and 27 walks to 47 Ks as opponents hit .293 off him.

In three years he posted a career 20-12 record with four complete games, striking out 205 batters in 225 innings. Evans was the first representative of the Southern Conference to get selected in this year’s draft.

After starting the year 3-3, Teaford won seven straight decisions finishing 10-4 with a 3.96 ERA. He gave up 110 hits in 120.1 innings, striking out 122 to just 28 walks allowed as opponents hit .244 off the left-hander.

A First Team All-Southern Conference pick for the second straight year, Teaford led the league in innings pitched, strikeouts and complete games (4) while tying for second in wins and ranking sixth in opponent batting average. He finished among the leaders in the SoCon ?Pitcher of the Year’ balloting.

A native of Daingerfield, TX, Mitchell was a first team All-Southern Conference selection in his only season with UNCG. He led the SoCon with a .397 batting average, while also pacing the league with a .458 batting average in SoCon action. Mitchell led the Spartans in slugging percentage (.568), on-base percentage (.493), hits (93), triples (7), home runs (5), total bases (133), RBIs (41), walks (42) and stolen bases (24).

The final 32 rounds saw nine SoCon players drafted, including league Player of the Year pick A.J. Davidiuk of Furman.
