College of Charleston Sweeps Doubleheader

College of Charleston 5-4, Georgia Southern 2-1

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The #21 College of Charleston won the final two games of its series with Georgia Southern 5-2 and 4-1 in a doubleheader Monday in Southern Conference baseball action at Patriots Point Field.

 

With the two wins the Cougars improved their record to 35-11 overall and 17-4 in the SoCon as Nick Chigges (8-1) and Jeff Beliveau (4-2) earned the two wins for Charleston with Josh McLaughlin picking up his 12th save of the season in game one.

 

GSU falls to 26-23 with the two losses on the year with a 12-9 mark in the SoCon.  Dustin Evans (2-3) and Josh Lairsey (3-4) were credited with the losses for the Eagles.

 

Alex Garabedian had five hits in seven at bats for the Cougars with a home run, a double and three runs batted in the doubleheader.  Philip Coker was four-for-eight from the plate on the day and Larry Cobb had three hits driving in three runs and scoring another two runs himself. 

 

With the doubleheader sweep the Cougars won their 28th straight SoCon series dating back to May of 2003. 

 

In game one Chigges pitched eight strong innings giving no earned runs and striking out seven batters to earn the victory.  Garabedian was perfect at the plate going four-for-four including a two-run homer to left to help lift Charleston past GSU. 

 

As a team the Cougars scored five runs on 12 hits committing two errors in the game while Georgia Southern scored two runs on six hits while also committing two errors in the loss.

 

Game two saw freshman Jeff Beliveau pitch six-and-two-thirds shutout innings striking out five batters to earn the win.  Coker went two-for-four at the plate and both Garabedian and Oliver Marmol drove in runs as the Cougars took game two 4-1.

 

Charleston scored four runs recording seven hits and committing three errors in the game while Ga. Southern scored one run on seven hits with three errors as well.
