SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference today named Elon’s Robert Rodebaugh the league’s baseball Player of the Week, while Western Carolina’s Greg Holland was tabbed as the conference’s Pitcher of the Week.
Rodebaugh, who won the honor for the second time in as many weeks, hit .529 (9-for-17) with 11 RBIs, six extra base hits and five runs in four wins last week for the Phoenix. The junior designated hitter from Marietta, GA posted three multiple hit games against Furman (8-for-13, .615), driving in nine of his 11 runs in the series with the Paladins. Rodebaugh, who had three doubles and three home runs on the week, produced a 1.235 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage. That slugging percentage increased to 1.462 in the three games at Furman.
WCU’s Holland had a hand in the Catamounts’ two wins last week in league play over UNC Greensboro. The sophomore right-handed pitcher from Marion, NC posted a 1-0 record with a save and a 0.00 ERA in two appearances. In 3.2 innings, Holland struck out four batters and gave up three hits. Holland pitched the final 2.1 innings and fanned three in Friday’s game with the Spartans to pick up his seventh save of the season. He then got out of a jam in each of the final two innings to register the victory.
Others considered for the Player of the Week award included Appalachian State’s Joey Robinson (.455 average in three games at The Citadel), Davidson’s Alex Entrekin (3-for-5 with a HR and four RBIs in win over Gardner-Webb), Georgia Southern’s Greg Dowling (3-for-5, including the game-winning HR in win at College of Charleston) and Wofford’s Shane Kirkley (two HRs and three RBIs in win over South Carolina).
Others considered for Pitcher of the Week were Appalachian State’s Garrett Sherrill (earned win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief against The Citadel), The Citadel’s Wes Wrenn (struck out career-high eight in complete game win over Appalachian State), Elon’s Steven Hensley (complete game win at Furman, fanning eight), Georgia Southern’s Everett Teaford (struck out six in nine-plus innings in win over College of Charleston) and Wofford’s J.D. Melton (pitched five innings of one hit relief in getting win over South Carolina).
