Indianapolis, IN - The Division I Men's and Women's Tennis Subcommittee has selected the 64 teams and 16 first and second-round sites for the 2006 Tennis Championships. First- and second-round competition will be May 12-13 or 13-14, with the winner of each site advancing to the championships in Stanford, California. The team championship will be held May 20-23.
The Furman men's tennis team will travel to Athens, GA to take on the top-seeded Georgia Bulldogs for the first round match on May 12. The Paladins, ranked 75th nationally, will do battle with the Bulldogs for the 12th time with Georgia holding an 11-0 advantage in the series. The two schools meet earlier this year with Georgia shutting out Furman 7-0. Furman received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after defeating Chattanooga in the finals of the Southern Conference Championship. This will be the fourth team appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the Paladins and first since 2001 when the Paladins lost to Georgia in the first round. The winner will move on to the second round on May 13 and will take on the winner of the Georgia Tech/Alabama match.
The 64th ranked Lady Paladins drew a first round match against the University of Kentucky on May 12 in Clemson, SC. These two schools have met only once back in during the 1985-86 season with Kentucky downing Furman 9-0. The Lady Paladins also received a bid to the NCAA Tournament after capturing the Southern Conference Tournament Title over Davidson. The NCAA appearance will be the third straight for the Lady Paladins and seventh in the past eight years. Furman became the first SoCon team to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament when the Lady Paladins topped LSU 4-1 in 2002. The winner of the Furman/Kentucky match will take on the winner of the Clemson/Siena match on May 13.
Times for both matches will be determined at a later date.
