McNeill Wins Flight, Finishes 15th Overall in Shot Put at NCAA East Regional Championships

First woman to ever compete in NCAA Championships in school history

Greensboro, N.C. - Junior Stephanie McNeill became the first female in The Citadel's history to compete in an NCAA Championship event Friday afternoon as she won her flight in the women's shot put with a throw of 46' 10.25". McNeill placed 15th overall in the most competitive, dense region in the country as she competed in the NCAA East Regional Championships.

McNeill's throw won her flight of nine competitors and her 15th place finish put her two spots ahead of South Carolina's prodigious Precious Akins, beating Akins by more than four inches. North Carolina's Kelly Fazekas edged McNeill for 14th place with a throw of 47' 2.25".

McNeill's performance in the NCAA East Regional Championships marks the first time a female cadet has competed in an NCAA Championship event in any sport in the school's 184 year history. McNeill, a junior from Ladson, S.C., will return for her senior season in 2007. She led the Bulldogs to their most successful year in history in 2006.
