SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference today named UNC Greensboro’s Jermaine Mitchell the league’s baseball Player of the Week, while College of Charleston’s Nick Chigges was tabbed as the conference’s Pitcher of the Week.
Mitchell, a junior outfielder, batted .636 (7-for-11) with three doubles, four runs and five RBIs in the Spartans’ three-game sweep of Wofford. The Daingerfield, TX native opened the series by going 3-for-4 and drove in the game-winning run on a one-out double in the eighth. Mitchell then went a combined 4-for-7 in Saturday’s doubleheader, delivering a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth of game one to drive in two runs to tie the game at 7-7. He finished the week with a .909 slugging percentage and a .714 on-base percentage.
CofC’s Chigges made two starts last week and was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 16.2 innings pitched. The junior right-handed hurler from Columbia, SC struck out seven and allowed a pair of unearned runs while scattering five hits in a win over Georgia Southern this past Monday. He then recorded a no-decision at Furman on Saturday, limiting the Paladins to six hits. Chigges allowed four runs, all of them unearned, and fanned seven.
Others considered for the Player of the Week award included Appalachian State’s Wes Borden (hit .438 with two multi-hit outings and three RBIs in four games), College of Charleston’s Larry Cobb (10-for-21 with seven RBIs and six stolen bases in six games), The Citadel’s Matt Matulia (batted .500 with four 2Bs and six RBIs against Davidson) and Georgia Southern’s Greg Dowling (.500 average with three extra base hits, four RBIs and five runs).
Others considered for Pitcher of the Week were The Citadel’s Justin Smith (posted his first two career saves against Davidson), Georgia Southern’s Everett Teaford (12 strikeouts and his fourth complete game of the year against Appalachian State) and UNC Greensboro’s Pat Currin (posted two wins in relief against Wofford, striking out eight in 5.1 innings).
