RALEIGH, N.C. ? The North Carolina General Assembly recognized Appalachian State University’s 2005 NCAA Division I-AA national championship Wednesday at the State Capitol in Raleigh. The joint resolution adopted by the House of Representatives and the Senate honoring Appalachian was read and passed on the floors of each chamber.

The resolution honored ASU for winning the first-ever football national championship by a public college or university in North Carolina and the memory of coaching legend Jim Brakefield, who led Appalachian football during the transition to NCAA Division I status in the 1970s.

“What a great day for the university, the University of North Carolina school system and the state of North Carolina,” Appalachian chancellor Dr. Kenneth E. Peacock said while addressing the House of Representatives. “Thank you for all your support to the university allowing Appalachian to excel both academically and athletically.”

Dr. Peacock was joined by ASU head coach Jerry Moore, assistant coaches Shawn Elliot and Scott Satterfield, athletics director Charlie Cobb and members of the football team on the floor of both chambers.

“We couldn’t have accomplished what we did without great leadership,” Moore said in front of the General Assembly.  “Commitment and persistence are what make our football team.

“This trophy and the rings mean a lot,” Moore added. “But, they don’t mean as much as what these young men will become.”
