Elon 8, Wofford 0

SPARTANBURG, SC - Lance Chastain threw a four-hitter and struck out six in leading Elon to an 8-0 win over Wofford at Russell C. King Field on Saturday afternoon.

Chastain no-hit the Terriers through the first four innings.  Steven Fusaro singled through the left side of the infield leading off the fifth for the Terriers' first hit of the game.  Fusaro would add a single in the seventh.  Wofford's other two hits were an infield single by Bradford Eaves in the eighth and a Shane Kirkley single in the ninth.

Wofford's starting lineup has been patched together due to a series of injuries.  Not one Terrier started on Saturday in the same position that they held on opening day.

Rightfielder Ben Austin drew just his second career start on the mound. Normally a rightfielder, Austin allowed five runs in the first two innings before settling down.

Elon took an early lead when Chris Price rifled a three-run homer with nobody out in the first.

The Phoenix added a pair of runs in the second when Price knocked an RBI double and Adam Weaver hit a sacrifice fly.  Ryan Addison hit a solo homer in the fifth to put Elon ahead 6-0.

Elon loaded the bases with one out in the sixth and Austin was replaced by Lance Player.  Player escaped the inning on one pitch as Vasami hit into a 1-2-3 double play.

Elon added a single run in the seventh when Robert Rodebaujgh led off the frame with a double and scored on an infield ground out by Pat Irvine.  The Phoenix tallied its final run in the ninth when Rodebaugh singled, moved to second on a single by Addison and scored on a single by Irvine.

Wofford rightfielder Chuck Eller spectacular catch in the fourth when he made a two-out diving catch in right center off the bat of Vasami with two runners aboard.

Chastain went the distance to improve to 7-1 on the year.  He need just 101 pitches as he walked one and faced just four batters over the minimum.

Austin went 5 2/3 innings and allowed nine hits and six runs, five earned.  He walked three and struck out one.

The loss drops Wofford to 15-20 overall and 2-9 in the SoCon.  Elon improved to 24-11, 8-3.

The two teams conclude the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at King Field.

The Citadel 4, Furman 1

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Ryan Owens held the Furman offense to only five hits in eight innings to help lift The Citadel past the Paladins 4-1 on Saturday afternoon in Riley Park.

The Bulldog senior lefthander registered seven strikeouts on the day as the Bulldogs handed Furman its first Southern Conference loss of the season.  The defeat also snapped a 14-game Paladin winning streak against league foes dating back to last year.

The Citadel (17-14, 4-4 SoCon) jumped on top in the second as Mark Egleton led off the frame with an infield single and then swiped second. Zach Brown drove in Egleton with a single to center to give the Bulldogs a one-run advantage.

Furman (19-10, 7-1 SoCon) scored its lone run in the third as Spence Gibbs tallied a lead-off single to right. With one out Ben Terry worked the count for a walk, and Andrew Greene followed with an RBI-single to plate Gibbs and even the score at 1-1.  The base hit extended Green’s hitting streak to 23 games.

The Dogs reclaimed the lead in the fifth. Matt Matulia walked with one out in the inning and advanded to third on Furman throwing error.  Tripp Cappelmann then roped a single to center to score Matulia, and Chance Smith later added a sacrifice fly to bring in Mashak and put The Citadel up 3-1.

Back-to-back doubles in the seventh gave the Bulldogs extra insurance as Brown led off with a double to right and then scored on a two-bagger by Matulia to make it 4-1. Brown paced the Dogs offensively, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and run.

Link Saunders, who took the loss in Friday’s series opener, came on in the final frame to preserve the 4-1 victory and record his 10th save of the year.

Owens (2-4) was credited with the win as he matched his career-high eight frames, allowing only one run on five hits and fanning seven. Furman starter Mason Smith (3-2) suffered the loss as he went 4 2/3 innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out three.

The series finale is set for Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Appalachian State 11, UNC Greensboro 8

BOONE, N.C. ? Left fielder David Rubinstein and catcher Kevin Butler combined to go 8-for-9 with four doubles, two triples, a home run, four runs scored and five RBI to lead Appalachian State University baseball to an 11-8 victory over UNC Greensboro on Saturday afternoon at Red Lackey Field. With the win, Appalachian evened the three-game Southern Conference series with UNCG at a game apiece.

Rubinstein finished a single shy of hitting for the cycle with a 4-for-4, three-RBI performance. The freshman from Charlotte broke a 6-3 game wide open in the fifth with a two-run homer on the first pitch from UNCG reliever Patrick Currin. He collected a double, triple and homer in his first three at-bats but ruined his shot at the cycle when he drilled a ball to the left-center field wall for an RBI double in the seventh.

Butler turned in a 4-for-5, two-RBI effort and fell just a home run short of the cycle. Like Rubinstein, the senior from Rock Hill, S.C. recorded a pair of doubles and legged out his first-career triple.

Appalachian (12-17-1, 2-9 SoCon) trailed 3-1 after two-and-a-half innings but put 10 runs on the board over its final six at-bats to climb into a tie for eighth place in the conference race. Rubinstein’s homer highlighted a four-run fourth and fellow freshmen Ben Billingsley and Rand Smith also contributed long balls to the ASU rally.

For the second-straight Saturday, freshman ace Garrett Sherrill came on in the ninth to earn the save. Junior Jonathan Reeder held a Spartan offense that racked up 20 runs and 20 hits on Friday to just four runs in 6.1 innings to move to 2-3 on the season.

Catcher Adam Deleo led UNC Greensboro (13-19, 3-5 SoCon) with a 3-for-5 effort. Starting pitcher Wes McCall (1-6) gave up four runs in just four innings of work to suffer the loss.

The rubber match of the three-game SoCon series is set for 1 p.m. Sunday at Red Lackey Field.
