STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern men’s tennis team fell 7-0 to Mercer University Thursday afternoon (April 6), at Hanner Courts.
The loss is the fifth in a row for the Eagles (5-12, 2-5 SoCon), who begin a stretch of three matches in four days. The doubles team of Vincent Patry (Paris, France/Lycee Jacques Monod) and Joris De Weerdt (Mortsel, Belgium/Latin-Modern Languages) was defeated for the first time since being paired together by the Mercer team of Tobias Ohrstrom and Warren Woolfolk, 8-4 at the No. 1 spot. Two pairs competing together for the first time were Daniel Harden (Columbus, Ga./Hardaway) and Neil Shine (Augusta, Ga./Augusta Prep) at No. 2, and Jakub Hanusz (Stola Wola, Poland/Zespol School) and freshman Jamin Dean at No. 3. Both pairs saw defeat, 8-4 and 8-1 respectively.
Mercer (12-10, 6-3 A-Sun) handled the Eagles in singles play, winning five of the six matches in straight sets. Playing for the first time this year at the No. 3 spot, Hanusz was forced to retire in the second set of his match, giving Mario Gil a 6-0, 3-0 victory.
Georgia Southern will look to bounce back tomorrow as the team hosts Jacksonville University at noon.
