The Southern Conference named Western Carolina’s Matt Cook its Men’s Golfer of the Week and the Catamounts’ Kandy Carland its Women’s Golfer of the Week for the week ending April 5. Cook’s honoring marks the second straight Player of the Week nod for him and the third consecutive week that a Western Carolina men’s golfer has acquired the accolade.

A sophomore, Cook carded an even par 72 to end the Wofford Invitational with a three-round total of 217 that left him finished second individually in the event. Cook’s 217 was just one stroke out of first place.

Cook, who is the SoCon scoring average leader (71.65), has now finished in the top five in all four Catamount events this spring, registering six in total on the campaign. The Murphy, NC, native led all golfers at the Wofford Invitational with 13 birdies over 54 holes.

Carland obtained her first collegiate victory on April 4, besting Katie Dick of Methodist College on the first hole of a sudden death playoff to acquire medalist honors at the High Point Spring Invitational.

The Hendersonville, NC, native fired a career-best two-round total of 152 to meet Dick in the final. The win over Dick gives Carland three-straight top 20 finishes this spring and gives Western Carolina as a team four individual medalist honors this season.
