Furman 7, Davidson 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The visiting Furman Paladins spoiled Davidson's Senior Day with a 7-0 victory over the Wildcats in men's tennis action Wednesday afternoon at Covington Courts. Furman improves to 14-10 overall and 5-1 in league play, while the Wildcats fall to 9-9 on the campaign and 2-5 in the Southern Conference.
Furman grabbed an early 1-0 team advantage by winning two of the three doubles matches. The duo of Greg Maarschalk and Ben Pauluhn lost to Davidson's number one doubles team of Flaviu Simihaian and Ethan Jaffee, 8-2, but the Paladins recorded two hard-fought triumphs at both number two and three doubles with 8-5 wins.
The Paladins continued their streak in the singles competition by claiming each of the six duals in straight sets.
Along with today being the last chance for seniors Daniel Bermeo, Joe Cheaney, Thomas Jeter, Andrew Reichel and Thomas Runge to perform in front of the home crowd, this afternoon's match was Davidson head coach Jeff Frank's last home contest. The 34-year coaching veteran is retiring at the end of June.
The school's all-time winningest coach in any sport, Frank owns a 540-316-1 record and has posted winning records in 29 of his 33 seasons. Frank has also guided the Wildcats to at least 10 victories each year prior to his final season.
"Davidson is a special and unique place where I have felt comfortable as a student and coach," Frank stated in February. "I believe if I had not been at Davidson, I would not have stayed in coaching for 34 years."
The Wildcats will play their first of two road matches to conclude the 2006 season on April 8 at Appalachian State. The match with the Mountaineers is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Furman will also be in action Saturday, April 8 as it hosts The Citadel at 1 p.m.
Loyola Marymount 6, Wofford 1
The Wofford men's tennis team could not garner any additional scoring after earning the doubles point Wednesday afternoon in falling to Loyola Marymount, 6-1, in Los Angeles as part of the Terriers' spring break trip to California. Wofford was also slated to face Azusa Pacific on the trip Tuesday, but the match was cancelled due to rain.
Against the Lions, the Terriers posted wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions to garner the point. Senior Chris Barlow and sophomore Andrew Stubbs registered an 8-6 triumph at the No. 1 slot against Linas Cicenas and Mike Wojnarowicz. Freshman Scott Collins and junior Jeff Muthig tallied an 8-2 victory over Derek Essoyan and Matt Phillips in the No. 3 contest.
The win by Barlow and Stubbs is their eighth of the season, tying them for the team lead with juniors Michael Barber and Alex Fridzon.
Wofford displayed a solid effort in falling in all six singles matches.
The Terriers fall to 8-10 with the loss, while the Matadors improve to 11-9. Wofford will return to Spartanburg Thursday before preparing to host Southern Conference-leading College of Charleston at the Reeves Tennis Center starting at 1 p.m. Saturday. The match will be the final home contest of the season for the Terriers.
