SPARTANBURG, SC -- Appalachian State has a hold of the top spot for the Commissioner’s Cup, as Chattanooga has taken the lead in the Germann Cup, at the conclusion of the 2005-06 fall and winter sports seasons.
Appalachian State’s men’s teams have held on to the top spot accumulating 50 points. The Mountaineer men finished first in cross country and football and finished second at the indoor track and field championship to lead the field. Chattanooga is in second place with 46.5 points, followed by Davidson in third with 44.5 points and UNC Greensboro fourth at 38.5 points. Western Carolina is fifth with 32 points, followed by Furman just one point behind in sixth with 31 points and Elon in seventh with 29. The Citadel holds down the eighth spot with 27 points, while Georgia Southern, Wofford, College of Charleston and VMI round out the standings.
Chattanooga has taken the lead in the Germann Cup standings with 45 points after picking up 13 points for women’s basketball and eight points for indoor track and field. Davidson is in second with 41.5 points, followed closely by Appalachian State with 40.5. Western Carolina is fourth with 34.5 points, while the College of Charleston and Furman sit tied for fifth with 34 points a piece. UNC Greensboro has accumulated 28.5 points for seventh, followed by Georgia Southern with 26 points in eighth. Elon, Wofford and The Citadel complete the women’s standings.
The Commissioner’s and Germann Cups are awarded annually to the Southern Conference schools fielding the league’s best all-around men’s and women’s sports program. Schools earn points based upon its regular season finish, with bonus points going to the team that wins the conference tournament.
The Commissioner’s Cup was inaugurated in 1970 and the Germann Cup was first awarded in 1987. The latter is named after former SoCon Commissioner Ken Germann.
The spring championships schedule begins April 16-18 in Charleston, SC, with the men’s golf tournament and concludes back in Charleston for the baseball championship May 23-27.
