SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference today named Furman’s A.J. Davidiuk the league’s baseball Player of the Week, while Elon’s Steven Hensley was tabbed as the conference’s Pitcher of the Week .
In three games last week, Davidiuk .714 (10-for-14) with 11 RBIs, five runs scored, three home runs, two doubles, and a stolen base in leading Furman to a three-game Southern Conference sweep of Wofford, moving the Paladins to 6-0 in league play. The senior shortstop from Indian Trail, NC, homered in all three games and raised his season batting average 62 points (to .374) in the three-game series. The victories extended Furman’s current winning streak to six games and improved the Paladins’ season mark to 17-8 for the program’s best mark after 25 games since 1996.
The Phoenix’s Hensley picked up a win at College of Charleston on Sunday, going 7.2 innings. The right-handed freshman from Asheville, NC, equaled his career best with eight strikeouts and allowed one walk. Of the seven hits Hensley surrendered, only one went for an extra base and he gave up one run.
Others considered for the Player of the Week award included The Citadel’s Chris Swauger (6-for-15 in four games last week), Davidson’s Jay Heafner (7-for-15 with 10 runs scored), Western Carolina’s Blake Murphy (9-for-15 with 10 RBIs and 10 runs scored).
Others considered for Pitcher of the Week were The Citadel’s Wes Wrenn (complete game nine-hitter versus UNC Greensboro), Davidson’s Blake Osburn (struck out five in 7.0 scoreless innings against Georgia Southern to earn first collegiate victory) and Furman’s Matt Klinker (struck out career-high 10 and gave up six hits in 7.0 innings in win over Wofford).
