Southern Conference Women's Tennis Results from Apr. 2

Davidson 6, Appalachian State 1

 

BOONE, N.C. ? The Mountaineers couldn’t bounce back from a hard-fought, 2-1 loss in doubles play, as the Appalachian State University women’s tennis team fell to Southern Conference rival Davidson, 6-1, Sunday at the ASU Stadium Tennis Courts.

With the loss the Mountaineers fall to 10-6 overall and 3-3 in SoCon play, having lost their last three conference match ups. The Wildcats improve to 13-7 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in league play.

Davidson picked up the first win at doubles as the team of Kelsey Linville and Michele Fanney defeated freshman Monica Tomas (Valado De Frades, Portugal) and sophomore Frances Blanton (Raleigh, N.C.), 8-2, at the No. 1 position. ASU’s No. 2 team of senior Lyndsey Free (Marietta, Ga.) and sophomore Anja Gugger (Cary, N.C.) evened the doubles competition at one win apiece with an 8-6 victory over Lindsey Powell and Kim Whelan.

With the doubles point on the line, Davidson’s Kate Levitt and Lora Dushanova pulled out a tough 8-6 win over seniors Victoria Moody (Irmo, S.C.) and Salem Kirven (Greensboro, N.C.) at the No. 3 spot to clinch the point for the visitors.

Tomas had the only ASU singles victory on the day, as she came back from a set down to defeat Fanney, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

The Mountaineers take a week off before hosting SoCon foe UNC Greensboro, Sunday, April 9 at 1 p.m. at the ASU Stadium Tennis Courts.

Winthrop 7, Georgia Southern 0

 

Rock Hill, S.C. - After picking up victory in a conference match against Elon yesterday, the Lady Eagles were not able to stretch the winning streak to two, falling against Winthrop 7-0 on Sunday, (April 2).

Georgia Southern was able to score a doubles victory at the No. 3 spot as senior Kim Wollett (Ocala, Fla./Belleview) and freshman Jessica Matlosz (Alpharetta, Ga./Centennial) defeated Winthrop’s Alexandra Dyckman and Malin Sjoqvist 8-5.

After that however, the Eagles of Winthrop took over the match both in singles and doubles. Only Wollett was able to push her singles match past two, taking the first set 7-6 in a tiebreaker, but then losing 6-3, 10-7 to Paula Takahashi.

Georgia Southern will return home this week to host three matches in four days as they take on conference foe College of Charleston on Wednesday, (April 5). Matches against Jacksonville University and UTC will follow on Friday and Saturday.

East Tennessee State 7, College of Charleston 0

The ETSU women’s tennis team recorded their 11th 7-0 sweep of the season, defeating former conference opponent College of Charleston Sunday afternoon. The Lady Bucs improve to 19-4 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 10-9.

In doubles action, the Lady Bucs came out swinging as they swept the Cougars in all three matches. In the No. 2 position, Olya Batsula and Tara Byrne started the morning off by defeating Jenna Marks and Amanda Becker, 8-2, while Sandie Knight and Elena Volobueva defeated Ashley Finnegan and Jessica Tuckman, 8-2 to clench the doubles point in the No. 3 position. The doubles team of Masha Ilina and Sylwia Ziolkowska completed the sweep, defeating Chelsea Albertz and Payten Ellington, 8-5 in the No. 1 position.

After winning the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead, the Lady Bucs again dominated College of Charleston winning all six of the matches in straight sets. In the No. 1 position, junior Masha Ilina defeated Chelsea Albertz, 7-5, 6-0, while sophomore Olya Batsula defeated Amanda Becker, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 2 position. Sandie Knight defeated Ashley Finnegan in the No. 3 position, 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Elena Volobueva defeated Payten Ellington, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 4 slot while Tara Byrne defeated Jenna Marks, 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 position. In the No. 6 singles position, Vita Moskaliova defeated Kelsey Darnell, 6-3, 6-1

The ETSU women’s tennis team’s next match will be Saturday, April 8, against UNC-Greensboro, to close out the regular season before heading to Macon, Ga. for the A-Sun conference tournament. The match will start at 1:00 p.m. The Cougars are at Georgia Southern Wednesday, April 5th at 2:00 p.m.
