The Southern Conference today named Appalachian State’s Lindsay Glover its softball Player of the Week and Western Carolina’s Mendy McKenzie its Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 23. The honor is the second straight Pitcher of the week nod for McKenzie and her fifth of the campaign.

Glover, a junior third baseman, batted .545 (6-for-11) in a three-game set with Chattanooga. During the series Glover broke her own school record for hits in a season, setting the new standard presently at 65. Glover also tied the school record for runs in a season (28).

The Greensboro, NC, native produced two hits apiece in each of the games and garnered an RBI. Glover also recorded 13 putouts in the series and stole two bases.

A freshman pitcher from Clemmons, NC, McKenzie went 3-0 for the second straight week, tallying two SoCon victories in a series sweep of UNC Greensboro. McKenzie pitched three complete games (21.0 IP) last week, fanning 23 for an average of 7.7 strikeouts per game.

McKenzie also became the first pitcher in the league to reach the 20-win plateau (20-5) last week, ending the week atop the conference in ERA (2.03) and strikeouts (184) as well.

Others considered for the Player of the Week award included College of Charleston’s Izmena Cabrera (hit. 429 in 2-1 series victory over Furman), Chattanooga’s Ashleigh Bull (.296 batting average with four RBIs in 2-1 series victory over Appalachian State), Georgia Southern’s Sam Steiner (hit .500 with two runs scored and three RBIs in 2-3 week), UNC Greensboro’s Jennifer Bonilla (.381 batting average last week with three RBIs) and Western Carolina’s Stephanie Beatty (.412 average, with a team-high slugging percentage of .647 in 5-0 week).

Those who received consideration for Pitcher of the Week included College of Charleston’s Shannon Howard (1.50 ERA in 1-0 week), Chattanooga’s Ashley Frizzell (1-1 record and one save last week) and UNC Greensboro’s Danielle Byrne (2-1 record with 12 Ks last week).
