SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference today named Furman’s Case Cassedy the league’s baseball Player of the Week, while Georgia Southern’s Everett Teaford was tabbed as the conference’s Pitcher of the Week.
Cassedy helped the Paladins to a 3-1 record last week by hitting .611 (11-for-18) with nine extra base hits, 11 RBIs and six runs scored. The senior first baseman, who had a 1.389 slugging percentage, opened the week with a 2-for-4 performance against sixth-ranked Clemson, including hitting the go-ahead two-run double in the seventh. Cassedy then doubled three times (3-for-4) and scored two runs in Furman’s 3-2 win at Appalachian State Saturday. After going 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday, Cassedy became the first Paladin since 2000 to hit for the cycle in the team’s 17-11 win over the Mountaineers. He finished the game 5-for-6 with four runs, a career-high seven RBIs, a double, triple and a pair of home runs.
The Eagles’ Teaford shut down UNC Greensboro on Friday, hurling 8.0 innings of shutout ball. The left-handed hurler from Alpharetta, GA scattered three hits in his outing and didn’t allow a runner past second base after a two-out triple in the first inning. Teaford, who retired 11 of 12 batters in one stretch, struck out 10 batters for his sixth career game of 10-plus Ks.
Others considered for the Player of the Week award included Appalachian State’s Adam Beasley (6-for-12 with seven runs, six RBIs and six walks in four games), The Citadel’s Sonny Meade (.471 average in four games with three multi-hit contests), Davidson’s Alex Entriken (hit .474 with seven RBIs, five runs and four extra base hits), Elon’s Grant Rembert (9-for-21 with five RBIs and two home runs), Georgia Southern’s Chris Hollis (8-for-12 with six runs and two RBIs in three games against UNC Greensboro), UNC Greensboro’s Adam Deleo (8-for-12 with two RBIs in four games).
Others considered for Pitcher of the Week were Appalachian State’s Jason Rook (struck out six and gave up two runs in 7.0 innings in win over Furman), College of Charleston’s Nick Chigges (struck out five and gave up no runs on five hits in 7.0 innings against Wofford), The Citadel’s Link Saunders (earned a save and a win against Western Carolina, fanning three in 4.0 innings of work) and Elon’s Steven Hensley (earned win at Davidson, striking out eight in 8.0 innings of work).
