College of Charleston 6, Wofford 3
Mount Pleasant, S.C. -- Lefty Quinn Monsma pitched four shutout innings in relief and Chris Campbell drove in four runs, including the game-winner in the sixth inning as 17th-ranked College of Charleston completed its three-game Southern Conference sweep of Wofford with a 6-3 victory on Sunday before 1,071 at Patriots Point Field.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 33-9 overall and 15-3 in league play. Wofford fell to 17-27 and 3-15.
With the game tied at 3, Charleston's Phillip Coker led off the sixth with a double to left and moved to third on Oliver Marmol's bunt, Charleston's eighth sacrifice in the series. Campbell followed with a grounder to third that scored Coker, who beat the throw by first baseman John Brandt with a head-first slide at the plate for a 4-3 CofC lead.
Charleston got RBI single's by Campbell and Jess Easterling in the eighth for the final margin.
Trailing 3-1 in the fifth, Wofford tied the game on an error and a two-out double to right by Bradford Eaves that scored Shane Kirkley.
With game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Monsma replaced Charleston starter Jeff Beliveau with runners at first and second and no outs. Monsma forced Keith Munns at third on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Eric Sturkie for the first out, got Steven Fusaro on a grounder to short and ended the inning by getting Chuck Eller on a grounder back to the mound.
Monsma allowed no runs on just two hits with a walk and three strikeouts to improve to 5-1 on the season. Dawson Smith (2-3) suffered the loss allowing four runs on only four hits in 6 2/3 innings of work.
The Terriers got two hits each from Adam Wood, Kirkley, Eaves and Munns as part of their nine-hit attack. Campbell, who had an RBI single in the first and a sacrifice fly in the third, went 2-for-3 at the plate. Marmol and Easterling added two hits each for Charleston.
The Cougars take on rival The Citadel on Tuesday at Joe Riley Park at 6:00 as part of the first "Turn Back The Century Game" where both teams will wear throwback uniforms and use wooden bats.
Wofford plays at Clemson on Wednesday at 7:15.

Western Carolina 8, The Citadel 5
Charleston, S.C. ? The Citadel baseball fell to Western Carolina, 8-5, in game one of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Riley Park. The Catamounts evened the series, 1-1, with the win as the Bulldogs and Catamounts will battle for the series victory in game two of a doubleheader on Sunday, April 23 at 4:10 p.m. Freshman designated hitter Sonny Meade paced The Citadel offense as he went 2-for-4, including a two-run home run in the eighth.
Western Carolina (22-17, 9-8 SoCon) took an early 3-0 lead in the first thanks to a pair of RBI-singles and a bases loaded walk. Blake Murphy knocked in Barrett Shaft for the first score before Mitchell Hatley earned an RBI after drawing a walk. Wilson then plated Murphy with a single up the middle to give the Catamounts a three-run advantage.
The Citadel (19-20, 5-9 SoCon) made it 3-1 in their half of the inning as Meade hit an infield single to send freshman Graham Couch across the dish.
The Catamounts tacked on another run in the fourth as Jason Haynes ran home while Tim Hallam was caught up in a run-down play between first and second. Hallam was eventually tagged out for the third out, but not before Haynes’ run was counted.
The Dogs pulled within one in the fourth as seniors Mark Egleton and Matt Matulia smacked back-toback singles to lead-off the frame. A sac bunt of the bat of sophomore Matt Arnold moved the runners up before a passed ball allowed Egleton to race home. Senior Tripp Cappelmann then roped an RBI single to center to bring in Matulia and make it 4-3.
An RBI-single off the bat of Jonathan Greene tacked on another run for the Catamounts in the fifth. Western then tallied two more in the eighth as Scott Ward knocked a single into center to plate two, giving the Catamounts a four-run lead.
Meade stepped in and blasted a two-run shot over the scoreboard in left for his second round-tripper of the season, putting the Bulldogs within two in the eighth. Western then added some insurance in the ninth as Murhpy notched an RBI-triple for his second RBI of the game, making the final 8-5.
Tyler Sexton (6-4) was credited with the win as he tossed 6.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits and striking out seven. Ryan Owens (2-6) suffered the loss as he pitched 5.0 frames, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits, while fanning five. Greg Holland picked up his fourth save of the season for the Catamounts as he went 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out two.
The Citadel 4, Western Carolina 3
Charleston, S.C. ? Down 3-2 in the ninth, The Citadel rallied to overcome the one-run deficit and
clinch the series win over Western Carolina, 4-3, in game two of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Riley Park. Senior Brady Mashak ripped a two-out, RBI-single to give the Bulldogs the walk-off, one run victory, while Citadel starter Matt Crim registered a career-high eight strikeouts in the longest outing of his career.
After dropping the first game, 8-5, the Dogs came back to take their second Southern Conference series win of the season. Two of the three games in the series were decided by one-run as the Cadets defeated the Catamounts, 5-4, on Friday night.
Trey McDaniel paced the Western offense as he batted 3-for-4 and knocked in two of the Catamounts’ three runs, while also scoring the go-ahead run in the seventh. Western starter Brock Thornburg tossed eight complete inning and registered two outs in the ninth before allowing the tying run to cross the plate.
The Citadel (20-20, 6-9 SoCon) struck first as they took a 1-0 lead in the third. Catamount second
baseman Jason Haynes misfielded a ball that allowed catcher Sid Fallaw to reach first. Fallaw moved over to second on a sac bunt off the bat of second baseman Tripp Cappelmann. A groundout by center fielder Trent Weathers put Fallaw on third before right fielder Matt Covington smacked an RBI-double down the left field line to give the Bulldogs a one-run advantage.
Western Carolina (22-18, 9-9 SoCon) took the lead in the fourth as Blake Murphy singled through the left side with one out. Jonathan Greene grounded to short, but Bulldog shortstop Matulia committed a throwing error, allowing Murphy to advance to third, while Greene stayed at first. Greene then raced to second on a wild pitch before McDaniel knocked in both runners with a single to left center to put the Catamounts up, 2-1.
The Bulldogs evened the score at two in their half of the frame as left fielder Chris Swauger ripped a base hit up the middle to get things started. Freshman designated hitter Sonny Meade moved Swauger to third as he roped one down the left field line that was declared a ground-rule double after the ball bounced over the wall in foul territory. First baseman Zach Brown then recorded a sac fly to center to plate Swauger.
The Catamounts reclaimed the lead in the seventh as Trey McDaniel tallied a lead-off triple to the gap in left center. Scott Ward came on to pinch hit and pushed McDaniel across the dish with a groundout to second to put Western back up, 3-2.
The Dogs entered the ninth trailing by one as Meade dropped a single into right to lead-off. Freshman Graham Couch came in to pinch-run for Meade and moved to second on a sac bunt off the bat of Brown.
A groundout to second by Matulia put Couch on third with two outs. Third baseman Matt Arnold tallied his only and most important hit of the day as he doubled to center to send Couch home and tie it up at three. Mashak fell behind in the count, 0-2, before lining a walk-off, RBI-single to right center to plate Arnold, giving The Citadel the 4-3 victory.
Junior closer Link Saunders (4-4) was credited with the win as he tossed two innings, holding the
Catamounts scoreless, while allowing one hit and striking out one. Western starter Brock Thornburg (2- 3) suffered the loss as he went 8.2 frames, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits and fanning seven. Thornburg was pulled after surrendering the double to Arnold that tied up the ball game at three.
Citadel starter Matt Crim enjoyed a strong outing after struggling in his last two starts. The freshman southpaw pitched seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on only five hits, while striking out a career-high eight batters.
Meade batted .500 over both games as he was 4-for-8, including a double and a two-run home run, while driving in three and scoring once. Four other Bulldogs also enjoyed a multi-hit performance on the day as Swauger batted 3-for-8, while Covington, Matulia and Arnold each recorded two hits.
The Bulldogs will take to the diamond again on Tuesday, April 25 as The Citadel will play host to the College of Charleston for the Trademark Properties’ “Turn Back the Century” game presented by Builders First Source at 6 p.m. in Riley Park. Players will wear throwback uniforms and use wooden bats in the mid-week, non-conference contest. The first 500 fans for each team through the gate will receive replica “throwback” t-shirts. Elon 10-8, Davidson 3-3
DAVIDSON, N.C. ? Elon University won a game suspended by rain on Sunday afternoon at Davidson, 10-3, before defeating the Wildcats in the regularly-scheduled contest, 8-3, to win the Southern Conference series, two games to one. The Phoenix improve to 32-12 on the season and 14-4 in the league, while Davidson drops to 15-25 overall and 4-14 in the SoCon.
The day began with Elon holding a 3-1 lead at the start of the third, as the two teams could only play two innings on Saturday due to lightning and rain. The Phoenix quickly added two runs to its lead off of reliever Michael Kaufman, who replaced Saturday’s starter Blake Osborn (1-5). Grant Rembert ripped an RBI single and Paul Bennett lofted a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-1.
In the fourth, Rembert cracked his sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot, giving Elon a six-run cushion.
The two teams traded runs in the fifth, with Chris Price driving home Donny Jobe with a single for the Phoenix, and senior Jay Heafner grounding a single up the middle to plate fellow senior Alex Entrekin, who had doubled.
Elon tacked on solitary runs in the seventh and ninth innings on a bases-loaded single by Chris Vasami and a solo home run by Price, his 10th of the year.
Davidson pushed across its final run in the ninth off reliever Ryan Basham when freshman Pat Brady doubled and senior Ronnie Shore doubled him home.
Matt Chastain (9-1) pitched eight strong innings to become Elon’s first nine-game winner in nine years. He scattered 11 hits and walked two as he yielded two runs while striking out five.
Both Jobe and Vasami had four hits as the Phoenix banged out 18 in the game. Rembert led all players with three RBIs, and Vasami, Price and Bennett all had two.
For Davidson, everyone in the lineup had at least one hit, while five players had two safeties. Heafner’s RBI single in the fifth moved him into second place on the Wildcats’ all-time hit list with 238.
In the rubber game, Elon took advantage of four Davidson errors and turned them into three unearned runs in the 8-3 victory. Adam Weaver drove in the first run of the game with a grounder to second in the second inning after a throw back to the mound allowed runners at first and second to advance. Jordy Snyder then singled home another run for a 2-0 Phoenix lead.
Elon got another unearned run in the fourth before knocking Wildcat starter Brant West (4-5) from the game in the sixth when the first two batters reached base. Reliever Zach Kayne walked the first batter he faced to load the bases, then Weaver smacked a two-run single. Kayne escaped the inning, however, without further damage.
The ’Cats got those two runs back in their half of the sixth on a two-out single by junior Gregory Zage with the bases loaded to make the score 5-2.
Single runs for the Phoenix in each of the seventh, eighth and ninth innings put the game out of reach. Davidson’s final run came on junior Rob Wilson’s fifth home run of the year in the seventh.
Steven Hensley (3-3), like Chastain before him, tossed eight innings and allowed three runs on five hits, walking one and fanning eight.
Weaver drove in four runs for Elon, and Wilson had two of Davidson’s seven hits in the game.
Davidson returns to the diamond on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. when it hosts Duke. Elon next plays at home on Tuesday evening against UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m.

Appalachian State 7-11, Furman 2-17
BOONE, N.C. -- Appalachian State University baseball’s Jason Rook turned in a strong pitching performance in game one and Furman’s Case Cassedy hit for the cycle in game two as the Mountaineers and Paladins split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Red Lackey Field. Appalachian won the opener, 7-2, and first-place Furman took the nightcap, 17-11.
Rook limited the Southern Conference’s top hitting team to just two runs on six hits over seven innings in Sunday’s first game. The true freshman from Greensboro, N.C. struck out six and evened his record at 4-4 on the season.
Ben Billingsley, Kevin Butler and David Rubinstein strung together three-consecutive RBI doubles in Appalachian’s five-run fifth. ASU also took advantage of three Furman errors that led to five unearned runs in the victory.
After the Paladins managed just five total runs against Mountaineer pitching in the first two games of the series, they exploded for 17 runs on 21 hits to take the rubber match of the three-game series.
Cassedy was the catalyst of Furman’s offensive explosion in Sunday?s nightcap, going 5-for-6 with a single, double, triple, two home runs, four runs scored and seven RBI. He helped FU jump out to a 12-3 lead on the strength of a first-inning solo homer to right center, a triple high off the left field wall in the third, a run-scoring single in the fourth and his second homer of the game in the fifth.
The Mountaineers battled back from the nine-run deficit with six runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth and trailed just 12-11 heading into the seventh. However, Cassedy’s RBI double highlighted a five-run seventh that gave the Paladins a commanding 17-11 lead and the Apps didn’t threaten the rest of the way.
All 18 players in game two’s starting lineups registered a hit and 12 players turned in multi-hit efforts. In addition’s to Cassedy’s two long balls, A.J. Daviduik and Jay Jackson both went deep for Furman (26-12, 12-3 SoCon) while Adam Beasley, Rubinstein and Joey Robinson all homered to help pace Appalachian (17-22-1, 5-13 SoCon).
Appalachian returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to face Charlotte at 6 p.m. The next day, Furman also resumes play at Charlotte at 6 p.m.

Georgia Southern 12, UNC Greensboro 5
STATESBORO, Ga. ?Georgia Southern finished off UNC Greensboro in a suspended game from Saturday afternoon, defeating the Spartans 12-5. The Southern Conference game took five minutes on Sunday to finish.
With Georgia Southern (22-19 overall, 9-5 SoCon) leading 12-4 in the top of the ninth inning, the game had to be suspended Saturday due to heavy rain and lightning in the area.
The Eagles staked their lead behind 7.2 innings of work by starter Dustin Evans (2-2) and an offense that scored at least two runs in each inning except the fourth and sixth.
Centerfielder Matt Miller had the most productive day for the Eagles, going 5-for-6 at the plate, scoring twice and driving in two runs. The hits tie Miller’s career high for a game.
Evans gave up a run to UNCG (17-24, 6-8) in the first inning on back-to-back balks that allowed leadoff hitter Greg Feltes to take third and home when Evans did not come set properly. He then kept the Spartans off the board over the next six innings, allowing seven hits, two walks and striking out six.
He was one out shy of completing eight full innings before giving way to reliever A.J. Battisto with the bases loaded. Greensboro was able to push two of those runners over in the eighth and one in the ninth before the rain began.
Evans allowed three runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out six. Hollis had four hits while Shehan added three. David Cogswell finished off the ninth inning.
UNCG starter Ryan Falcon (2-2) surrendered 10 hits and five earned runs in four and a third innings pitched. He walked three and struck out two. Jermaine Mitchell had three hits and three RBI. Adam Deleo also recorded three hits.
Georgia Southern 9, UNC Greensboro 8
STATESBORO, Ga. ? Chris Shehan lined a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth as Georgia Southern held on for a 9-8 win over UNC Greensboro Sunday (April 23) at J.I. Clements Stadium. The Eagles (23-19 overall, 10-5 SoCon) completed the three-game sweep, their first in Southern Conference play this year.
The Spartans struck in the third inning. Adam Deleo lined a one-out single up the middle then Logan Smith hit a double into the left field gap, putting both runners in scoring position. Josh Lairsey got Greg Feltes to line out but David Adams nailed a double ? one of seven UNCG hit in the game - for an early 2-0 lead.
Brett Pelfrey and Chris Hollis singled to start the third. After a strikeout, Matt Miller, Shehan and Greg Dowling hit consecutive singles, scoring three runs in all.
However, UNCG (17-25, 6-9) regained the lead off Lairsey in the fourth. A pair of doubles brought home the tying run, and then Smith dropped a RBI single with two outs putting the Spartans ahead 4-3. That brought in relief pitcher Mike Chiciak.
The junior right-hander threw a ball that got past catcher Griffin Benedict and went to the backstop. However, Deleo slid short of home plate and Chiciak was able to get the tag down, ending the inning.
Mike Economos hit his fourth home run on the year, a solo shot in the fourth to tie the game. Chiciak cruised until two outs in the sixth. He walked Greg Matson on four pitches then Sean Snell hit his first home run of the year, just over the fence and inside the left field foul pole.
The Eagles staged a two-out rally in the sixth. Jeremiah Parker drew a walk then Mike Economos beat out an infield single. Pelfrey skied a ball in front of the pitching mound but miscommunication between third baseman Guy Welsh, relief pitcher Wes McCall and first baseman Smith allowed the ball to drop and a run score. Hollis bounced a single through the left side, scoring Economos.
Brian Pierce hit a RBI single in nearly the same spot Hollis did then Miller added a RBI single to center, giving the Eagles an 8-7 lead.
Snell hit a one-out double off Matt Shurley in the eighth. Deleo greeted GS closer David Cogswell with another double to tie the game. Following an infield single, Feltes grounded to Pelfrey at second. The Eagles were able to turn the inning-ending double play when the base umpire ruled interference on the runner heading into second base.
Again the Eagles used a two-out rally to go ahead for good. Hollis lined a single with one out in the eighth. Two batters later he stole second, which prompted the Spartans to intentionally walk Miller. Shehan sent a 2-0 pitch up the middle which turned out to be the winning run.
Cogswell (2-5) picked up the win, scattering two hits in 1.2 innings of relief. Lairsey allowed four runs in 3.2 innings, walking two. Hollis paced the offense recording three hits while Miller, Shehan, Economos, Pelfrey and Pierce added two hits each as the Eagles out-hit UNCG 14-11.
Patrick Currin gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings. He struck out three Eagles. Clinton McKinney (1-4) suffered the loss as he was charged for one run on four hits in two innings. Deleo and Smith had three hits apiece for the Spartans.
UNCG hosts Wake Forest on Wednesday. Georgia Southern begins an eight-game road trip on Tuesday (April 25), traveling to Georgia State for a two-game series. Tuesday night’s first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Panthersville.
