The 2006 Southern Conference men’s and women’s tennis championships are set to get underway this weekend in Charleston, SC. The tournament begins Thursday, April 20 with the championship matches being played on Sunday, April 23. The tournaments will be played at the Earle Tennis Center on the campus of The Citadel and the City of Charleston Farmfield Tennis Center.
On the men’s side, the Elon Phoenix garnered the No. 1 overall seed after finishing the season with an 8-1 conference mark, clinching the top spot with a 5-2 win over the Furman Paladins who also enter the tournament sporting a 8-1 ledger. The Phoenix are led by freshman Damon Gooch and veteran Sebastian Bredburg and will play on Friday, April 21 at 10 a.m. at The Citadel Tennis Center, taking on the winner of the Davidson/Georgia Southern match.
The Lady Paladins enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed in the women’s bracket and will also begin play in the tournament on Friday, April 21 at 10 a.m., taking on the winner of the Elon/Chattanooga match which will be played on Thursday, April 20 at Noon. Furman is led by freshman Laura Gioia who posted an 11-10 overall mark, including going 6-2 in conference play.
The tournament will get underway on Thursday with a pair of matches in both the men’s and women’s brackets. Eighth-seeded Elon will take on No. 9 seed Chattanooga at Noon in the women’s championship, followed by No. 7 Georgia Southern taking on No. 10 Western Carolina at approximately 2:30.
Davidson and Georgia Southern will open play on the men’s side of the tournament on Thursday, April 21 at Noon. Jeff Frank, who is coaching his 34th and final year for Davidson, enters the tournament with a bevy of talented performers. Included in that group are senior Flaviu Simihaian and freshman Ethan Jaffee. No. 7 seeded Appalachian State will take on No. 10 seeded UNC Greensboro also at Noon at the Farmfield Tennis Center.
Matches continue on Friday with the women playing at the Farmfield Tennis Center and the men’s teams playing at the Earle Tennis Center.
