GREENSBORO, NC ? UNC Greensboro won all six singles matches and two of the three doubles pro-sets as the Spartans picked up their first Southern Conference victory of the year, 7-0, over Georgia Southern in men’s tennis action Sunday afternoon.

 

Five of UNCG’s six singles wins came in straight sets. Jason Steinhorn had the easiest time, defeating Jamin Dean, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Marc Ladouceur, playing in his final home match, also earned a straight-set win in singles action, defeating Vincent Patry, 6-3, 6-3.

 

UNCG returns to action on Friday when it visits Applachaian State in a 2 pm SoCon match-up.

Chattanooga 5, Appalachian State 2

 

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The men’s tennis team won its fourth straight match Sunday and third consecutive Southern Conference dual, defeating Appalachian State 5-2.

The Mocs claimed the doubles point by winning two of three doubles matches and earned wins in four of the six singles matches for the 5-2 victory.

UTC won at No. 1 and 2 doubles and took an early 1-0 lead. The Mocs won singles matches at No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 with two of those coming in three sets.

Artyom Vlasenko defeated Ryan Brookshaw, 7-6, 6-3 at No. 2, and Badr Bouabdellah edged Dimitar Dimitrov 7-6, 3-6 and 10-8 in a super breaker in the third set. The win for Bouabdellah was his 15th consecutive singles victory.

Mark Fynn and Razvan Axente rounded out the scoring for UTC. Fynn defeated Andrew Waters at No. 4, 6-4, 6-2, and Axente got past Andrew Taylor at No. 5, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Alex Probst and Robert Hogewood supplied ASU with its only points of the match. Probst defeated Ryan Fitzgerald at No. 1, 6-2, 7-6, and Hogewood scored a 6-3, 7-5 win over Josh Bales at No. 6.

The Mocs, 13-7 overall and 4-3 in the SoCon, host Tennessee Tech Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. ASU falls to 8-8 and 0-5.

Elon 5, Furman 2

 

ELON, N.C. ? Austin Fenn topped Daniel Knause 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles and Kevin Beard bested Chris Gilli 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 as Elon stunned No. 69 Furman for a 5-2 Southern Conference men's tennis triumph Sunday afternoon in front of a loud and vigorous crowd at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The Phoenix (14-4 overall, 7-1 SoCon) and the nationally-ranked Paladins (13-10 overall, 4-1 SoCon) remain neck and neck behind league leader College of Charleston (16-2 overall, 6-0 SoCon) in the conference standings. The Cougars, responsible for Elon's lone league loss this season, visit Furman next weekend.

“This is a huge win for our program,” said Phoenix coach Michael Leonard. “Our guys have believed in themselves all season long. We have had contributions from everyone in our lineup throughout the year. Our team has really come together (since a 5-17 campaign (0-10 in the SoCon) last season).”

Elon took two of the three doubles matches to earn an early 1-0 edge by logging the doubles point. Sebastian Bredberg and Kevin Colin upended Bo Ladyman and Brian Crook 8-5 in 53 minutes at No. 2 five minutes before Anuwat Dalodom and Gustaf Asplund fell to Andy Juc and Scott Kahler 8-5 at No. 3. A minute later, Fenn and Damon Gooch stopped Ben Pauluhn and Greg Maarschalk 8-5 at No. 1.

Juc tied the score at 1-1 by beating Dalodom 6-3, 6-3 in one hour, 13 minutes at No. 2 singles. Bredberg gave the Phoenix the lead back at 2-1 after posting a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Maarschalk in one hour, 34 minutes at No. 3. The Paladins evened the count at 2-2 when Ladyman ousted Asplund 6-3, 7-5 in one hour, 38 minutes at No. 4.

Fenn's win gave Elon the advantage for good after fashioning his victory in one hour, 47 minutes. Beard clinched the match for the Phoenix after dispatching his opponent in one hour, 51 minutes. Gooch turned back Pauluhn 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in two hours, 12 minutes at No. 1 to determine the final margin.

Winner of 14 of its past 16 matches now, Elon presented former Phoenix tennis star Pramote Malasitt with his 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America plaque just moments before the match began.

For its Southern Conference regular-season finale, Elon will host Davidson at 1 p.m. next Sunday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Furman visits Davidson at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday before hosting The Citadel at 1 p.m. Saturday and College of Charleston at 1:30 p.m. next Sunday
