Greenville, SC - The 64th ranked Furman women's won their eighth straight match Wednesday afternoon with a 7-0 shut out over Appalachian State. The win moves the Lady Paladins to 15-6, 8-0 in the Southern Conference, dropping the Mountaineers to 11-7, 4-4 in conference. The win was also Furman's sixty-ninth straight regular season Southern Conference victory.

In doubles Furman's Lauren Osborne and Jacqueline Eckert quickly won their flight two match, blanking Monica Tomas and Frances Blanton 8-0. Laura Gioia and Marti Morris secured the doubles point for the Lady Paladins with an 8-5 victory over Lyndsay Free and Anja Gugger in flight one. Furman also picked up a win in the flight three match with Lisa Bornt-Davis and Shannon Moore downing Salem Kirven and Victoria Moody 8-7(5).

Furman went on to win all six singles matches in straight sets to secure the shut out in the day. In flight one Laura Gioia blanked Anja Gugger 6-0, 6-0 and in flight two Marti Morris cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Monica Tomas. In her flight three match Lauren Osborne battled for a 6-4, 6-4 win over Victoria Moody while Shannon Moore downed Salem Kirven 6-2, 6-2 at No.4. Playing at No.5 Bonnie Baird hit her way to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Lyndsay Free and in the final match in flight six Lauren Tomory downed Frances Blanton 7-6(4), 6-1.

The Lady Paladins travel to Davidson, NC on Friday for their final match of the regular season against Davidson. With each team currently undefeated in conference play, the winner of the match will receive the No.1 seed in the Southern Conference Tournament next weekend. Match time is set for 2 PM.

Chattanooga 7, Western Carolina 0

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina entered its final regular season match Thursday afternoon with a chance to end on a positive note and advance its seeding in the upcoming Southern Conference women's tennis championship. However, the Chattanooga Lady Mocs found their groove, blanking the home standing Catamounts, 7-0, concluding the first season at the new Catamount Athletic Complex.

Western drops to 3-17 overall on the year, with one victory on the home courts against mountain-rival UNC Asheville, and winless in nine conference matches. UTC improves to 10-13, 2-7 in league action.

The Lady Mocs took the early advantage, 1-0, by winning the doubles point. With Western conceding number three, Chattanooga won doubles competition after the duo of junior Anastasia Zhukova and sophomore Lindsey Ballard defeated WCU's sophomore tandem, Trish Hanson and Mariona Trilla Jane, 8-2, despite the Catamount squad leading 2-1 in the match.

At number two, Western sophomore Susanna Sjokvist and freshman Holly Stocks made a great showing before falling, 8-5, to UTC's Bonnie Adams and Maureen Parris. The Catamounts trailed three games to two, but won back-to-back frames to pull ahead, 4-3, for their first lead of the match. Adams/Parris rallied, however, to win the next two to pull head, 5-4. WCU had a chance to even things up after jumping out on top 40-love behind the service of Stocks, but errors late in the game gave the win, and 6-4 lead, to UTC. The Lady Mocs would take two of the final three games to win the match.

Starting singles competition in a 2-0 deficit after conceding number six singles coupled with the doubles point, Western dropped two matches at numbers four and five, which sealed the match for the Lady Mocs. Stocks was defeated in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at number four by freshman Talita Bragato, and Abbott fell 6-1, 6-0 to classmate Beata Knizat at number five.

Rounding out singles competition, Hanson fell at number one by identical scores of 6-1 to Zhukova, while at number two, Sjokvist fell 6-1 and 6-3. The final match to finish on the afternoon was the most closely contested between Trilla Jane and Adams. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Trilla Jane led late in the second frame, 6-5, before Adams managed to knot things at six and force the tie-breaker, with Adams winning overall, 7-6 (5).

Western now sets its sights on the SoCon Championships, April 21-23 in Charleston, S.C. The Catamounts will enter the tournament as the tenth-seed, with first round opponents and final seedings announced later this week at www.SoConSports.com.

UNC Wilmington 5, College of Charleston 2

The UNC Wilmington women's tennis team won the doubles point and took four singles matches to earn the 5-2 win over the College of Charleston this afternoon at the Tennis Center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

The Seahawks improve to 21-4, while the Cougars fall to 12-11 on the year, as they end the regular season and prepare for the Southern Conference Tournament April 20th -- April 23rd on the campus of The Citadel. UNCW hosts Old Dominion Friday, April 14th, at 2:00.

The Cougars won number two doubles as Jenna Marks and Amanda Becker defeated the duo of Cassie Martin and Katie Carlson, 8-5. That would not be enough as Charleston faltered at number one and three, 8-4 and 8-2, respectively.

UNC Wilmingotn took victories at number one, number two, number four and number fivesingles to clinch the 5-2 win. Ashley Finnegan defeated Kristin Mears, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 at number three singles, while Kelsey Darnell took Carloson at number six singles, 1-6, 6-4, 10-7.
