BOONE, N.C. ? The Mountaineers picked up their second-straight win as the Appalachian State University men’s tennis team defeated North Carolina A&T, 5-2, in non-conference action, Wednesday at the ASU Stadium Tennis Courts.
With the win the Mountaineers improve to 10-9 on the season, while the Aggies drop to 6-16 overall. After snapping a three-match losing streak, ASU has now won two-straight matches.
Sophomore Robert Hogewood (Greensboro, N.C.) picked up two wins on the day, playing in just his sixth singles match of the season. In his first career try at the No. 5 position, Hogewood defeated Jared Martin, 6-2, 6-4. He teamed up with junior Alex Probst (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) to defeat the team of Jared and Jeremy Martin, 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.
Senior Andrew Taylor (Parkland, Fla.) was the only other Mountaineer to win two matches, defeating Porter Myrick, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4 singles. Taylor teamed up with sophomore Ryan Brookshaw (Pretoria, South Africa) for an 8-4, doubles point clinching win over Quincy and Vitas Hawley at the No. 1 position.
Senior Andrew Waters (Durban, South Africa) gave ASU a quick 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Jeremy Martin at No. 3 singles. Junior Dimitar Dimitrov’s (Sophia, Bulgaria) 6-0, 6-1 win over Quincy Hawley at No. 2 extended the Appalachian lead to 3-0.
North Carolina A&T picked up a win at No. 1 singles, before Hogewood clinched the match with his singles win, stretching the lead to 4-1. Taylor’s win made the score 5-2 before Vitas Hawley used a tiebreaker to give the Aggies the win at the No. 6 position.
The Mountaineers will hit the courts for two more matches before heading to the Southern Conference Championships next week. ASU will take on The Citadel, Friday, April 14 at 2 p.m. and Davidson, Tuesday, April 18 at 2 p.m. in a match rescheduled from April 8. Tuesday’s match will honor Appalachian’s two seniors, Taylor and Waters.

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Elon used four singles wins and the doubles point to secure a 5-2 men's tennis non-conference victory over East Carolina and extend its win streak to seven Wednesday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The loss was the third straight for the Pirates, who dropped their record to 8-12. The Phoenix, also winners of 11 of their last 12 matches, improved to 17-4 on the season.
In singles play, Elon's Damon Gooch, ranked No. 120 nationally according to the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings as administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, cruised past ECU freshman Aleksey Kochetov 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 slot, while Sebastian Bredberg posted a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over sophomore Ricardo Barone at No. 3. Gustaf Asplund followed by picking up a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 over senior Nick Rose and Kevin Colin rounded out the Phoenix' victory total by handing sophomore Mike Catalano a 6-0, 6-1 setback.
The Pirates earned wins at the No. 2 and No. 5 slots as sophomore Henrique Viana rolled past Anuwat Dalodom 6-2, 6-3 and freshman Brian Walters outlasted Austin Fenn 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (5).
Elon opened the match by winning two of three doubles contests with Bredberg/Colin and Asplund/Dalodom recording 8-6 and 8-3 victories over Rose/Walters and Catalano/Viana in the No. 2 and No. 3 matchups, respectively. The Pirates' No. 1 tandem, consisting of Barone and Kochetov, tallied an 8-6 triumph over Fenn and Gooch for ECU's only pairs win.
UNC Wilmington 5, UNC Greensboro 2
WILMINGTON, NC ? Three of the six singles matches went to a third set, and UNC Wilmington won two of them to lift the Seahawks to a 5-2 win over in-state rival UNC Greensboro in men’s tennis action Thursday afternoon.
UNCG got a straight-set win from senior Jason Steinhorn at No. 6 singles, defeating Christopher Yee, 7-5 and 6-3. Freshman Austin Wilty earned the Spartans’ other point at No. 4 singles, rallying to defeat Grant Holland in dramatic fashion, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.
However, the Seahawks won the four remaining singles matches and two of the three doubles matches to take the match.
UNCG awaits its paring for the Southern Conference Tennis Championship in Charleston, which get underway April 20 in Charleston, SC.
