Furman 4, Charleston Southern 2
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Joe Daysh’s two-run eighth inning single broke a 2-2 tie and lifted Furman to a 4-2 win over Charleston Southern in baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Furman Field.
Daysh’s decisive hit off Buccaneer reliever Joey Timmerman came with one out and scored Robby Bowers and A.J. Davidiuk. Nick Hollstegge pitched a perfect ninth to record his sixth save and make a winner of David Mitchell (1-0).
The victory was the 10th in the last 12 games for Furman (21-10), which banged out 12 hits in the contest, including three by Ben Terry and two each by Davidiuk and Jay Jackson. Paladin senior centerfielder Andrew Greene, however, had his 24-game hitting streak snapped after going 0-for-3 in the contest.
Charleston Southern (13-26) was paced at the plate by Ryan Smart, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The Buccaneers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after Lionel Green reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced to second on an error, and came home on Smart’s double down the left field line.
Furman tied the game in the fourth after Jackson singled with one out and scored on Davidiuk’s double down the right field line.
It remained 1-1 until the Furman seventh when Will Stembridge singled up the middle, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored on Marcus Rose’s single to right center for a 2-1 lead.
Furman starting pitcher Jay Jackson struck out seven and allowed only five hits and an unearned run in seven strong innings of work before being lifted for Patrick Arnett. In the eighth, Arnett recorded the first out in the frame before yielding a single to Justin Fyle and a double to David Perkins. Kyle Hayes followed with an RBI grounder off Paladin reliever David Mitchell that tied the game, but Mitchell kept it a 2-2 contest by striking out Chris Krogmeier looking to end the inning.
In the Furman eighth leadoff hitter Case Cassedy was hit by Buccaneer reliever Peyton Tweddale. Pinch running for Cassedy, Robby Bowers advanced to second on a balk and to third on Davidiuk’s infield single and errant throw to first by Buccaneer shortstop Adam Brown, which also allowed Davidiuk to take second. Daysh then drilled a line drive single to center off Timmerman to give Furman the 4-2 lead.
Furman returns to action Thursday when it entertains Georgia Southern in the first game of a three-game Southern Conference series at Furman Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The Citadel 10, Coastal Carolina 6
Conway, S.C. - The Citadel had four separate batters enjoy a multi-hit performance as the Bulldogs downed Coastal Carolina, 10-6, Wednesday night at Watson Stadium. Junior Zach Brown paced the Bulldog offense as he went 2-for-3, including three RBI and scoring once.
Coastal Carolina put five runs up in the first, but could only manage to push one more across for the remainder of the game. The Dogs combined for 14 hits on the day, while senior Matt Covington was 2-for-4, senior Matt Matulia was 3-for-4, including a double, and senior Tripp Cappelmann went 2-for-3. John Mariotti paced the Chanticleers, batting 2-for-4, including three RBI and a home run.
The Citadel (18-15) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as sophomore Chance Smith drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a groundout off the bat of Covington. Sophomore left fielder Chris Swauger reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and then swiped second as Smith stole third. Senior Mark Egleton struck out for the second out before Chant starter Zane Petty fell behind, 2-0, to Matulia and decided to intentionally walk him. With the bases loaded and two outs, freshman Sonny Meade recorded an infield single to plate Smith. Brown was then hit by a pitch to bring in Swauger and give the Dogs a two-run advantage.
Coastal Carolina (14-18) answered back with five runs in their half of the inning. Chris Raber was hit by a pitch to lead-off and then moved to second on a single by David Sappelt. Back-to-back Bulldog errors loaded the bases and allowed the first run to score. Mariotti then drove in two with a single to left center before Mike Fuentes registered a sac fly. Aaron Verret was responsible for the final run as he bunted for an RBI-single to put the Chanticleers up, 5-2.
The Dogs then went on to score six unanswered runs. Senior Brady Mashak and Smith each knocked in two with RBI singles in the third. Brown registered an RBI-single in both the fourth and sixth innings to give the Dogs an 8-5 lead.
The Citadel shutdown the Chanticleers for five innings before Mariotti smacked a solo-shot over wall in right center to pull the Chants within two.
The Dogs tacked on insurance runs in the final two frames as Cappelmann ripped an RBI-single to left center in the eighth and Swauger blasted an RBI-triple, his sixth of the season, in the ninth to make the final, 10-6.
Senior starter Ken Egleton, making his first start since Feb. 19, left the mound with a 7-5 lead after three innings of work. The right-hander allowed five runs, two earned, on five hits, while striking out two and walking one. After that, four Bulldogs combined to hold Coastal Carolina to only one run in the final seven innings.
Sophomore reliever Tim Martin earned his second straight win as he took to the mound in the fifth and held the Chants scoreless for two innings, giving up one hit and striking out one. Freshman starter Zane Petty suffered the loss in his first collegiate start as he went 2.1 frames, surrendering six runs, four earned, on four hits, while fanning three and walking four.
The Dogs return to Southern Conference action this weekend as they travel to Elon, N.C. to face the Phoenix for a three-game series beginning Friday, April 14 at 7 p.m. at Latham Park.

High Point 9, Wofford 6
HIGH POINT, NC ? Wofford rallied from a 7-0 deficit but fell shot at the end, dropping a 9-6 decision at High Point on Wednesday afternoon at George Erath Field.
Starting pitcher Adam Wood was touched up for six runs in an inning and two-thirds as the Terriers fell behind 7-0. The Panthers struck for six runs in the second inning as Matt Gantner hit a two-run triple to highlight the frame. Jeff Cowan singled home a run in the fourth to put High Point up 7-0.
Wofford rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh. Shane Kirkley was hit by a pitch to lead
off the inning and John Brandt followed with a base hit. When the leftfielder misplayed Brandt’s ball, each runner moved up a base. Bradford Eaves singled home Kirkley and Brandt scored on a sacrifice fly by J.D. Melton.
Eric Sturkie led off the eighth with a solo homer down the leftfield line to cut the deficit to 8-3. It was hit third homer of the season. The Terriers added three runs in the ninth. With one out, Melton singled and scored on a double by Sturkie. Chuck Eller then hit a two-run homer, his first as a collegian, to account for the final score.
Sturkie finished with two hits and two RBIs. Eller, Kirkley and Eaves each contributed a pair of hits.
Wood took the loss to fall to 0-3 on the year. High Point’s Eammon Portice fanned seven in seven innings to improve to 5-4.
Wofford will host Appalachian State in a Southern Conference series starting Friday night at 6:00 p.m. at Russell C. King Field.

Wake Forest 17, UNC Greensboro 2
WINSTON-SALEM, NC ? Three Wake Forest pitchers combined to limit UNC Greensboro to just one hit en route to a 17-2 win over the Spartans Wednesday afternoon at Hooks Stadium.
Demon Deacon starting pitcher Tyler Smith (1-2) picked up the win after allowing no runs on no hits while striking out one in six innings of work. Greg Young worked a pair of innings and allowed just the one hit while Kyle Young worked a perfect ninth to preserve the win.
Sean Snell produced UNCG’s lone hit in the top of the seventh as the Charlotte, NC native extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single through the left side.
Spartan reliever Clark Erskine (0-1), who was unable to record an out in the fourth inning, took the loss after allowing four runs on two hits during his stint on the hill.
UNCG (14-21) pushed across two runs in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead. Wes McCall led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a pass ball. Brandon Harvey followed with a sacrifice bunt, but Wake Forest catcher Austin Jones threw the ball into rightfield, allowing McCall to score and Harvey to reach third safely. Sean Snell then gave the Spartans a two-run edge with a sacrifice fly to left-centerfield to score Harvey.
Wake Forest (25-12) struck for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to turn a two-run deficit into a six-run advantage. The Demon Deacons loaded the base the start the inning and scored their first run of the game on a balk charged to Spartan hurler Clark Erskine, and then tied the game at two when Eric Williams drew a bases loaded walk. Allan Dykstra chipped in with a two-RBI single and Matt Antonelli added an RBI single before Evan Ocheltree crushed a two-run homerun over the centerfield wall.
Williams picked up his second RBI of the game and gave the Demon Deacons a 9-2 lead in the process with an RBI single to rightfield in the home half of the fifth. Dykstra followed with a three-run blast over the rightfield wall for his 12th homerun of the season to put Wake up 12-2.
The Demon Deacons tacked on two more runs in the seventh on a two-run RBI double to rightfield off the bat of Nate Frazier. Two batters later, Dan Rosaia delivered a pinch-hit single to centerfield that scored a pair of runners to give Wake a 16-2 advantage. Grant Achilles produced another run for Wake with a sac fly to center.
UNCG returns to the diamond Friday evening at 7 p.m. when the Spartans return to Southern Conference play to host Davidson at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
