HARRISONBURG, VA ? Freshman Mary Kate Bowman carded rounds of 82 and 81 to finish tied for 36th in a very competitive field of 75 individuals at the rain-shortened Bonnie Hoover Invitational this weekend at the par-72, 6,046-yard Lakeview Golf Club.
Bowman, a true freshman from R.J. Reynolds H.S. in Winston-Salem, led Appalachian in scoring for the second time in the past three tournaments and the third time in 2005-06. She finished eight strokes better than the next closest Mountaineer, junior Meredith Morrison, who rebounded from an opening-round 89 to post an 82 over the final 18 holes for two-round total of 171.
Sophomore Claire Flexer (89-83 172), senior Kaitlyn Johnston (88-86 174) and sophomore Andrea Crawford (94-91 185) rounded out the scoring for the Mountaineers.
As a team, Appalachian finished 14th out of 15 teams in the tightly-bunched competitive field with a two-round team total of 680. ASU finished just nine strokes back of the 12th place team (Long Island) and just 69 strokes separated Appalachian from tournament champion Penn State. The tournament was shortened from three rounds to two due to heavy rain in Harrisonburg, Va.
The Bonnie Hoover Invitational was the final tune-up for the Mountaineers before the 2006 Southern Conference Championship April 21-23 at the Mill Creek G.C. in Mebane, N.C.
