SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference today named College of Charleston’s Graham Maiden the league’s baseball Player of the Week, while Elon’s Steven Hensley was tabbed as the conference’s Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week.
In four games last week, Maiden batted .625 (10-for-15) with five funs and eight RBIs. The junior first baseman from Columbia, SC, had four extra base hits -- three doubles and a home run. Maiden, who had a 1.000 slugging percentage, went 7-for-9 with a homer, two doubles and six RBIs in the Cougars doubleheader sweep of Davidson on Sunday.
The Phoenix’s Hensley notched a win at Wofford on Sunday, tossing a complete game, four-hit shutout. The right-handed freshman from Asheville, NC, struck out a career-high 13 Terriers en route to his first career shutout. It was also his first career complete game.
Others considered for the Player of the Week award included Appalachian State’s Kevin Butler (8-for-16 on the week, including six extra base hits), The Citadel’s Mark Egleton (.333 average in four games last week), Elon’s Chris Vasami (two HRs and six RBIs in four games), Furman’s Andrew Greene (9-for-20 with six runs and three RBIs in five games), Georgia Southern’s Chris Shehan (.500 average with eight RBIs and eight runs in five games) and UNC Greensboro’s Greg Feltes (.429 average in four games, scoring seven times).
Others considered for Pitcher of the Week were Appalachian State’s Garrett Sherrill (earned a save against UNC Greensboro and a no-decision in seven innings of work the next day versus the Spartans), College of Charleston’s Danny Meszaros (11 strikeouts in 7.1 innings against Davidson), The Citadel’s Ryan Owens (struck out seven and held Furman to one run on five hits in 8.0 innings), Furman’s Nick Hollstegge (recorded two saves against The Citadel), Georgia Southern’s Everett Teaford (tossed nine scoreless innings in two appearances, including eight in a win over Western Carolina), UNC Greensboro’s Nick Starnes (career-high 11 strikeouts against Appalachian State, including eight of the first 11 batters he faced) and Western Carolina’s Greg Holland (saves against No. 7 Clemson and Georgia Southern).
