The Southern Conference today named Georgia Southern’s Shanita Black its softball Player of the Week and Appalachian State’s Yancy Moose its Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 9.

Black, a senior outfielder, hit .727 (8-for-11) in a weekend three-game series sweep of Furman. Black scored five runs in the three games and drove in another two.

The Fayetteville, NC, native is currently riding a school-record 26-game hitting streak and has four multi-hit games in her last five outings. Black set the new Georgia Southern standard in the career hits category last week, ending the weekend with 246 for her four-year career.

A freshman from Hamptonville, NC, Moose went 3-1 last week with a 1.12 ERA and a save against College of Charleston.

On the week, Moose garnered 17 strikeouts and allowed just one extra-base hit in 25.0 innings pitched.

Others considered for the Player of the Week award included Appalachian State’s Lindsay Glover (.318 batting average on week, accounting for both runs in Mountaineers’ 2-1 win over College of Charleston on Sunday, going 3-for-4 from the plate), Chattanooga’s Ashlan Clarkson (hit game-tying home run that sent game to extra innings in eventual 7-6 win over UNC Greensboro in game two of twinbill with Spartans), UNC Greensboro’s Jennifer Bonilla (.500 batting average last week, including game-winning two-run home run in 2-0 win over Chattanooga in game one of a doubleheader last Saturday), and Western Carolina’s Heather Pritchard (team-best .417 average on week with 1.000 slugging percentage).

Those who received consideration for Pitcher of the Week included Chattanooga’s Ashley Frizzell (11 strikeouts - two shy of the school record - in 2-0 extra-inning loss to UNCG and threw a one-hitter, including eight Ks, in 5-0 win over UNCG on Sunday) and Western Carolina’s Mendy McKenzie (12 strikeouts in two appearances).
