April 8, 2006 - CofC Competes Well At Duke Asics Invitational
DURHAM, N.C. - The College of Charleston Track & Field team competed at the 2006 Duke Asics Invitational in Durham, N.C. with Kosha Lance, Wells Trompeter, and Summer Chambless notching the highest finishes for the Cougars.
Lance finished sixth out of 36 competitors in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 160 feet and nine inches. Trompeter finished 13th in the 1,500 meter run finishing ahead of 66 other competitors with a time of 4:54.85. Chambless finished tied for 15th in the pole vault as she reached a mark of 10 feet and six inches.
Lance competed in the discus throw earning a top 25 finish with a mark of 115 feet and 10 inches. Trompeter also competed in the 3,000 meter steeplechase finishing with a time of 12:03.71. Chambless added a mark of 78 feet and three inches in the javelin throw.
Clare Goodwin had solid performances in the javelin and in the 400 meter hurdles with a mark of 79 feet and six inches and a time of 1:09.37 respectively. Dominique Boone continued her solid senior campaign as she notched a mark of 35 feet and ten inches in the triple jump and a mark of five feet and one inch in the high jump.
April 8, 2006 - The Citadel Records a Combined 33 Top 10 Finishes as Bulldogs Finish 5th at Clemson Invitational
Clemson, S.C. - The Citadel men's and women's track and field teams combined for 33 top-10 finishes at the Clemson Invitational as both teams finished fifth in team scoring. The men's team edged Howard by 10 points while the women's team beat out military rival VMI by 31 points.
Sophomore Jodi Whittle finished fourth in the 100m dash, edging Western Carolina's Cassandra Gentry by less than a tenth of a second. Whittle continued to perform well as she finished second in the 200m with a time of 25.93, topping Western Carolina's Aneesha Lane by two-hundredths of a second.
Megan Jenkins recorded a third place finish in the 1500m with a time of 4:54.11, just two seconds shy of a personal record. Laura Hewston recorded a personal record with a time of 19:36.33 in the 5000m, finishing 3-4 with Erin Ritter who ran a time of 19:42.30.
Sarah Strickland also set a personal best mark as she ran 11:47.78 in the 3000m Steeplechase, besting her previous mark by more than 20 seconds. The women's 4x400m relay team finished sixth with a time of 4:15.73.
Monique Edwards recorded a pair of top-10 finishes, placing fourth in the discus with a personal best mark of 131'. Edwards also placed seventh in the hammer with a throw of 143' 8".
Allison Taylor was another Bulldog to set a personal record, recording a fourth place finish in the javelin with a throw of 113' 5". Laura Phelan was right behind her with a fifth place finish a mark of 111'.
On the men's side, Thomas Pressley finished ninth in the 100m dash with a time of 11.08. Jonathan Vallejo and Bryan Hladik finished 9-10 in the 400m as Vallejo ran a 49.94 with Hladik finishing with a time of 50.19, a personal best for him.
Senior Marcus Butler ran the best 800m of his career with a time of 1:55.00, just five seconds shy of an NCAA Regional Qualifying mark, as Butler finished fourth, just a quarter of a second ahead of Western Carolina's Adam Puett.
Matt Holmes and Steven Craig also recorded a 4-5 finish as Holmes ran a 16:21.64 in the 5000m while Craig finished with a time of 16:42.94. In the 400m hurdles, Senior Thomas Cummings placed seventh with a time of 56.48 while redshirt freshman Jamel Brown followed him with an eighth place finish, running a 56.51.
Another Citadel 4-5 finish took place in the men's 3000m Steeplechase with Will Wilson placing fourth (10:02.54) and Charles Kutz finishing fifth with a personal best time of 10:16.78.
The men's 4x100m relay team ran a 42.93 to finish fifth while the men's 4x400m relay team recorded a season best time of 3:20.80, placing fourth.
Shaquill Smith was the runner-up to Clemson's Jason Bell in the triple jump as Smith recorded a mark of 44' 3.25". Rick Austin topped East Carolina's Terrance Myers in the shot put as Austin threw the shot 40' 11.75" to finish fifth. Meanwhile in the discus, Zach DiBois finished sixth with a throw of 124' 4".
The Citadel completed the trifecta in 4-5 finishes in the men's hammer as Austin recorded a season-best throw of 155' 6" to finish fourth while DiBois tossed the hammer 152' 1" to place fifth.
Austin had the sixth-best mark at the end of the javelin prelims but turned it on in the finals round as he finished third with a mark of 168' 11", a season best mark by nearly two feet.
The Citadel returns to action on April 14-15 as the Bulldogs travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the Fast Times Meet hosted by the University of North Carolina. April 8, 2006 - UNCG track team sets four school records at Duke Invite
DURHAM, NC ? Four UNC Greensboro track athletes set school records to highlight the Spartans effort at the Duke Invitational this weekend at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Jeff Williams shaved just over one second off his own school record with a 14th place finish in the 800 meters event. Williams set the old record last April 16 at the Carolina Fast Times meet in Chapel Hill with a time of 1:52.64.
Jess Weber set a record on the women’s side in the 800m with a time of 2:18.93 to place 10th in the event. The old record was 2:18.99, which was set by Eleanor Wilson at the Southern Conference Championship on April 18, 2003.
Heidi Pinkerton demolished her own record in the 3000m steeplechase with a 14th place finish on Saturday. Her time of 11:11.08 bested her effort of 11:21.99 two weeks ago at the Raleigh Relays meet.
On Friday, Xavier Rutz shattered his own school record in the 5000 meters as he finished 27th with a time of 14:57.88. That time trimmed nearly 18 seconds off his mark that was also set two weeks ago at the Raleigh Relays.
Weber placed 30th in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:45.10, which was only .02 off her school record time that was also set two weeks ago at the Raleigh Relays.
Erin Lord set a personal best in the 1500 meters on Friday with a time of 4:57.45 to place 20th in the development race. Her time was over two seconds faster then her previous top time.
Josh Wyatt and Keith Gruchacz finished 13th and 15th respectively in the 10,000 meters event with times of 32:33.88 and 32:51.30. Ryan Rodd also set a personal best time in the 1500 meter development run with a time of 4:08.96.
April 9, 2006 - Catamount Track & Field Finishes Second at Clemson Invitational; Three Hit NCAA Qualifying Times
Cullowhee, N.C. - A trio of Catamount track athletes hit NCAA regional qualifying marks as both the men and women's squads finished second to the host Tigers at the Clemson Invitational on Saturday. Seniors Milton Bolton (400-meter run) and Lawrence Briscoe (110-meter hurdles) qualified for the NCAAs on the men's side, while junior Asia Davis again ran a qualifying mark in the women's 400-meter hurdles.
All told, the Catamount track & field team recorded 24 podium finishes, including five, first-place performances at the Clemson Invitational. Both the men and women finished second to the host Clemson Tigers in the team scored event, tallying 147 points on the men's side and 149 on the women's.
Briscoe was the only new qualifier as both Bolton and Davis had qualified for the regional in earlier meets. Bolton reached the mark in the season-opening Charlotte 49er Invitational with a 47.23 and ran a season's best 46.94 on Saturday to win the event, the lone first-place finish for WCU's men. Davis ran her quickest time of the season last year in the Western Invitational and surpassed the regional mark again with a 59.71 in the 400-meter hurdles at Clemson. She just missed a top three finish with a fourth in the 100-meter hurdle event.
In addition to running a seasonal best 14.30 in the 110-meter hurdles to finished second and hit the qualifying mark, Briscoe also rank fifth in the 400-meter hurdle event and posted a podium finish in the men's high jump, clearing 1.95 meters (6-4.75) to place third.
Sophomore Zeb Johnson recorded top three finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dash, just edging freshman teammate Manteo Mitchell in the longer event by two, one-hundredths of a second, 21.45-to-21.47. Mitchell ran fourth behind Bolton in the 400-meter dash. Johnson and Bolton were joined by sophomore Mike Malone and freshman Kevin Johnson in the 4x100-meter relay, finishing second with a time of 40.84, just behind Clemson. In the other relay event, Charleton Grant, James Gregory, Chris Gaillard, and Duke Craig ran third in the 4x400.
Gaillard also finished with a third-place showing in the men's triple jump, leaping 13.10 meters (42-11.75), while just missing the podium in the long jump, placing fourth. Chris Page tallied two podium visits including a pair of third place finishes. The Tryon, N.C., sophomore finished third in the men's shot put (12.87m, 42-2.75) and was the second runner-up in the men's discus, edging teammate Willie Sturgis with a distance of 43.63 meters (143-2). Sophomore David Bowles was WCU's top finisher in the men's javelin, posting his second-consecutive runner-up with a second-place throw of 55.96 meters (183-7). Ryan Fussell and Tyler Ferguson just missed the top three, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.
Defending Southern Conference women's runner of the week, sophomore Tangelia Johnson, staked her claim at repeating the weekly honor by winning both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. At the shorter of the two sprints, Johnson ran 11.96 to win and she turned half a lap in 24.20 to claim the top prize in the 200-meter dash. Her classmate, Raquel Ramseur, won the women's 400-meter dash, crossing the stripe two seconds ahead of teammate, Aneesha Lane, in second place. Lane teamed with Brooke Saddler, NaShay McGriff, and Rashanda Simmons to place second in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 46.95.
In the middle distances, sophomore Kerrie Savery gave the Catamount women another podium finish, placing third in the 800-meter run with a seasonal best time of 2:14.15. Senior Deanna Kulesz just missed the podium, finishing fourth in the 1,500-meter run with her best time of the outdoor season, 4:56.33.
In the field events, freshman Angela Stark led a trio of Catamounts in the women's high jump, clearing a seasons-best tying height of 1.65m (5-5.0) to place second. She was followed by Brittany Whittaker and Jessika Johnson, each also clearing 1.65m to all stand tied atop WCU's outdoor season performance charts. Simmons recorded a third-place performance in the women's long jump, leaping 5.25 meters (17-2.75) and placed fifth in the triple jump (10.96m, 35-11.5). Sharhonda Bell stood on the podium in the women's shot put, placing third with her best distance of the season at 12.28 meters (40-3.5), just in front of teammate Nicole Lopez (12.01m, 39-5.0).
Western's track & field teams return to action this weekend, April 14-15, at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. Six of the Catamounts top outdoor performances from last season were recorded at the relays.
