Southern Conference Men's Tennis Results from Mar. 8

Hampton 7, Georgia Southern 0

STATESBORO, Ga. - Hampton University took two of three doubles matches and swept singles play to set down the Eagles 7-0, Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 8) on Hanner Courts.

The Georgia Southern No. 2 doubles combo of Vincent Patry (Paris, France/Lycee Jacques Monod) and Neil Shine (Augusta, Ga./Augusta Prep) was able to get past Hampton’s Marco Herrera and Joao Sacomandi 8-3, however the rest of the young Eagle squad did not fare as well. Freshmen Philip Prins (Cape Town, South Africa/Rondebosch) and Daniel Harden (Columbus, Ga./Hardaway) both took their singles matches to hard fought third sets, but could not prevail.

The loss sends the Eagles to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Hampton, the reigning MEAC champions, improve to 3-6 overall.

The men’s tennis team will have a chance to rebound and pick up a conference win when they travel to Davidson this Saturday, (Mar. 11), to battle the Wildcats. The match is set for 1 p.m.

The Wofford men's tennis team fell 7-0 at Winthrop in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at the Memorial Courts in Rock Hill, S.C.

Freshman Scott Collins was the most competitive Terrier in singles play, as he went the maximum three sets before falling to Alejandro Portugal, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 position.

In doubles action, senior Chris Barlow and sophomore Richard Cahi lost a hard-fought 9-7 decision to Portugal and Jorge Padilla during the No. 2 match.

Wofford will continue its four-match road swing with a Noon Saturday meeting against Southern Conference UNC Greensboro in Greensboro, N.C.

The Citadel 6, James Madison 1

Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel continued to roll Wednesday as they matched their season high win streak of three consecutive matches as the host Bulldogs (7-3, 3-1 SoCon) beat James Madison (4-8, 0-3 Colonial Athletic Association). James Eason, who won his seventh consecutive singles match with an easy 6-3, 6-0 win over JMU's Bob Allensworth, led the Bulldog Netters.

The Citadel started off strong by taking two of three doubles matches to secure the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead in the match. Ananda Sawmynaden and Derek Jose strolled to an 8-4 victory over Allensworth and Brian Clay at No. 3 doubles. Eason and Daniel Dossetor won their fifth consecutive match to remain undefeated in doubles play with an 8-6 win over JMU's Carlin Campbell and Jesse Tarr. The Dukes' John Snead and Brian Rubenstein barely edged The Citadel's David Lara and Nick Medica at No. 2 doubles, 9-8 (8) in a tiebreaking point thriller.

Eason strolled to another victory at No. 3 singles to put the Cadets up 2-0 in the match while Derek Jose made the score 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles over Rubenstein. Dossetor clinched the Bulldog victory with a win at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1, over Tarr.

Lara added to the Bulldogs' score with a 4-6, 7-6 (10), 10-3 win over Clay. Martin King recorded his first loss as Campbell gave James Madison their lone match point with a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles. Ananda Sawmynaden, at No. 2 singles, edged John Snead 7-6 (6) in the first set and trailed 5-4 in the second frame before igniting a second rally in as many days to win the second set and the match, 7-5.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Thursday, March 9 as they host No. 54 Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. in the start of a doubleheader. The Citadel will then take on Richmond at approximately 4 p.m. The Hokies and the Spiders will face each other at The Citadel at 9 a.m. that day.
