WCU Finishes Third At Jaguar Invitational; UNCG Finishes Third At Fighting Camel Spring Classic

CULLOWHEE, NC - The Western Carolina Women's Golf Team completed their first tournament of the spring with a third place finish at the South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational played at the par 72, Azalea City Golf Course. The Catamounts fired a 297 in round two, improving ten strokes over their first round total.

Middle Tennessee fired a second round 295 to edge the host South Alabama Lady Jaguars by three strokes to claim medalist honors. Western was twelve strokes out of first, with Lamar (614) and Florida Atlantic (615) rounding out the top five.

Junior Bianca Melone was the low scorer for Western, carding rounds of 77 and 73 to stand tied for ninth-place overall, marking her first top ten finish of the year. Two strokes behind Melone was sophomore Malin Fryk with rounds of 77 and 75 for a two-round total of 152.

Senior Brandy Andersen made the biggest improvement on day two, rallying rallied back from an opening round 80 to fire an even par 72 in the final round. Fryk and Andersen have both recorded five, top twenty showings this year. Senior Ashley Hovda finished with a 77 on day two, just missing the top twenty to finish tied for twenty-first with a total of 153. Rounding out WCU's scoring was sophomore Kandy Carland, who carded a 78 in the final round to finish tied for twenty-eighth (155).

Western's third-place finish at the Lady Jaguar Invitational marks the sixth time in seven tournaments that the Catamounts have finished in the top five this season. It was also the fourth, top three finish for WCU this year.

The Catamounts return to action on March 20-21 in Citrus Springs, Fla., for the Lady Herd/El Diablo Intercollegiate. Two years ago, WCU finished as medalists at El Diabo, garnering a third place showing last year at the same event.

LILLINGTON, NC - The Wofford women's golf team garnered an eighth-place finish out of the 12 teams at the Fighting Camel Spring Classic at the Keith Hills Country Club, Monday and Tuesday. The Terriers shot a 343-334-332--1009 (+145) at the Campbell-hosted tournament on a par 72, 6,020-yard course.

Wofford was just one of two schools to record a lower third-round score than a second-round tally. The Terriers' two shot difference topped the other team to accomplish the feat, Kennesaw State, which dropped its score by just one stroke.

Junior Laura Parris and freshman Erin Wells carded the team's top individual tallies as the pair tied for 34th after finishing 35-over par. Parris posted an 82-86-83--251, while Wells shot an 88-84-79--251.

Two shots behind them was fellow rookie Colleen Rice, who tied for 41st after registering rounds of 86-79-88--253 (+37). The 79 during the second round was her career-low effort for 18 holes.

Sophomore Mary Ellen Herring posted a 38-over par 87-85-82--254 to finish in a tie for 43rd.

Rounding out the Wofford scores was senior Lauren Stephenson. She notched a 55-over par 94-88-89--271 (+55) to tie for 58th place.

Georgetown captured the team crown with a 73-over par 310-311-316--937 and the Hoyas' Chelsea Curtis paced the individuals with a 9-over par 72-72-81--225.

The Terriers will resume their season Monday and Tuesday at the North/South Spring Intercollegiate at the Jacksonville Beach Golf Club in Jacksonville, Fla.

BUIES CREEK, NC ? Ashley Mylton fired a final round 76, nearly pulling off an incredible rally, but finished second to lead UNC Greensboro to a third place finish at the Fighting Camel Spring Classic hosted by Campbell University at Keith Hills CC.

 

Mylton, a sophomore from Charlotte, NC entered the final day in second place, but trailed by seven shots. She made up five of them, but couldn’t quite catch Georgetown’s Chelsea Curtis, who shot an 81 to hold on for the individual title. Mylton recorded her first ever Top 10 finish. Her previous best was 12th at the 2005 Shamrock Intercollegiate.

 

Lacy Miller also recorded her first collegiate Top 10 finish by placing eighth with a tournament total of 237. Her previous best was a 16th place tie at the 2005 Southern Conference Championship.

 

The Spartans finished third as a team with a tournament total of 954. Georgetown won the event with a team total of 937, followed by host Campbell at 950.

 

UNCG returns to action next Sunday when it begins play in the Pinehurst Challenge hosted by College of Charleston.
