Men's Basketball Southern Conference

Hines Honored by U.S. Basketball Writers Association

ST. LOUIS, MO ? UNC Greensboro sophomore forward Kyle Hines was named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association’s All-District team on Tuesday.

Hines was named to the 10-man District III squad, which covers North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. The national list is a who’s who in college basketball and District III’s selections are probably the most impressive. Nik Caner-Medley from Maryland, Justin Gray of Wake Forest, North Carolina’s Tyler Hansbrough and David Noel, Duke’s Shelden Williams and J.J. Redick, Cedric Simmons of North Carolina State, Sean Singletary of Virginia and Curtis Withers of Charlotte joined Hines on the squad. Redick was named the District Player of the Year, while North Carolina’s Roy Williams earned District Coach of the Year. Redick and Williams earned first-team All-American honors.

Hines, a 6-6 sophomore forward from Sicklerville, NJ, led the Spartans in scoring at 19.3 points per contest, the most by a Spartan in the program’s Division I era. He also led them in rebounding at 8.2 per game and blocked shots with 84. Already UNCG’s all-time leader in blocked shots with 190, Hines’ 578 points this season were the most by a Spartan in its Division I era and the second-highest single-season total in school history. Hines surpassed the 500 rebound mark for his career and is just shy of 1,000 career points entering his junior year.

He shot 62.2 percent from the floor this season, which is the seventh-best percentage in school history and may be good enough to make him the first player in nearly 30 years to lead the Southern Conference in field goal percentage back-to-back seasons. His 239 field goals are the second-highest single-season total. A first-team all-conference selection for the second straight year, Hines led the Southern Conference in double-doubles with 10 and ranked among the league leaders in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, blocked shots, steals and minutes played.
