SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Appalachian State University men’s tennis team dropped its Southern Conference opener, 5-2, against Wofford, Friday at the Reeves Center.

With the loss the Mountaineers drop to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in Southern Conference play. The Terriers improve to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Appalachian earned the doubles point, winning at No. 1 and No. 2. The team of Ryan Brookshaw and Alex Probst defeated Chris Barlow and Andrew Stubbs, 8-6, at No. 1. Robert Hogewood and Andrew Taylor picked up the other doubles win, defeating Jeff Muthig and Scott Collins, 8-5, at No. 2.

Andrew Waters picked up the only singles win, defeating Scott Collins, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 4 singles.

Appalachian returns to action when it heads to Burlington, N.C. to take on Elon, Friday, March 10 at 2 p.m.

Georgia Southern 4, The Citadel 3

 

Charleston, S.C. - The Georgia Southern men’s tennis team earned their first victory of the season Saturday (March 4) as the edged The Citadel 4-3 in the first Southern Conference match of the year for the Eagles.

Georgia Southern was forced to rally after dropping the doubles point, two matches to one. Vincent Patry (Paris, France/Lycee Jacques Monod) and Neil Shine (Augusta, Ga./Augusta Prep) earned the lone doubles victory for GSU from the No. 3 spot, while The Citadel (4-3, 2-1 SoCon) pair of Daniel Dossetor and James Eason took down Lasha Janashia (Tbilisi, Rep. Of Georgia/American Heritage) and Philip Prins (Cape Twon, South Africa/Rondebosch) 8-1 at No. 1, and Joris De Weerdt (Mortsel, Belgium/Latin-Modern Languages) and Jakob Hanusz (Stola Wola, Poland/Zespol School) fell 8-6 at No. 2 to The Citadel’s Nick Medica and David Lara.

The Eagles (1-3, 1-0 SoCon) fought back in singles action though. With the match tied 3-3, the final point came down to No. 2 singles as Janashia battled Ananda Sawmynaden of the Citadel to a three set victory. After dropping the first set 7-5, Janashia rallied back to take the next two sets 6-4 and secured the point, and the Eagles first win of the season.

“This is definitely how we wanted to open conference play,” said head coach Justin Miles. “The match was a total team effort in every way possible and we’ll look to carry that type of momentum into tomorrow’s match.”

Georgia Southern will remain in Charleston as they will play Charleston Southern tomorrow (Sunday, March 5) at 1 p.m.

The College of Charleston earned its fourth sweep in a row, defeating Georgia Southern, 7-0, in men’s tennis action this afternoon at the tennis center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

The Cougars improve to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Conference. Georgia Southern drops to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the league.

The Cougars opened the day with doubles in all three matches to earn the point heading into singles play. The closest match of the day in singles was a 6-4, 6-4 win by Mike Reynolds over Philip Prins at the number five spot.

Georgia Southern hosts Hampton the 8th at 2:00 PM while Charleston hosts Charlotte the 6th at 1:00 PM.

RALEIGH, N.C. ? Damon Gooch bested No. 64 Nick Cavaday 7-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles in Elon's 5-2 non-league men's tennis setback to No. 33 North Carolina State Sunday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the N.C. State campus.

Gooch improved to 6-3 this spring with his victory over nationally-ranked Cavaday while the Wolfpack (13-1) collected two doubles and four singles decisions en route to ending a six-match winning streak for the Phoenix (6-3).

Elon's Sebastian Bredberg (7-2 this spring) claimed his seventh consecutive triumph of the season, rallying past Val Banada 2-6, 7-6, 10-7 at No. 3 singles. The Phoenix duo of Gooch and Austin Fenn improved to 4-3 this spring with an 8-2 defeat of Banada and Will Shaw at No. 1 doubles.

The Pack won two of three doubles pairings to take an early advantage in the match. At No. 2, Cavaday and Chris Welte edged Bredberg and Kevin Colin 8-6. William Noblitt and Ben Zink followed with an 8-5 win at No. 3 over Gustaf Asplund and Anuwat Dalodom.

N.C. State picked up four singles wins to ensure the team victory as Andre Iriarte upended Dalodom 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2, Noblitt beat Asplund 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4, Shaw knocked off Fenn 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 and Jay Weinacker turned back Colin 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6.

The Phoenix will return to Southern Conference action when Appalachian State visits the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center at 2 p.m. Friday. The Elon women's tennis team (6-4) will also square off against the Mountaineers at that time.

Chattanooga 5, Wofford 2

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The men's tennis team won the doubles point and four singles matches Sunday to win its first SoCon match of the season, 5-2 over Wofford.

The Mocs, now 8-3 overall and 1-1 in the league, swept the doubles competition to gain a 1-0 advantage.

UTC then won the bottom four singles matches.

Artyom Vlasenko defeated Alex Fridzon, 7-5, 7-5 at No. 3, and Badr Bouabdellah beat Scott Collins, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4.

Razvan Axente and Josh Bales also notched straight set victories. Axente upended Richard Cahit, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5, and Bales bested Michael Barber, 6-4, 6-4.

Andrew Stubbs and Chris Barlow claimed singles wins for the Terriers at No. 1 and 2 respectively.

The Mocs take on Alabama-Huntsville Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Huntsville, Ala.

The College of Charleston won its seventh straight match in a 6-1 win over Charlotte in men's tennis action at Patriots Point Tennis Center on Monday.

Charleston improved to 7-1 with win win and plays host to Hampton in a 1:00 start on Saturday.

College of Charleston won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point and won five of the six singles matches to claim the overall victory.

The Citadel 5, UNC Greensboro 2

 

Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel cruised through the doubles point and fought hard through all six singles matches to come away with a 5-2 victory over the Spartans of UNC Greensboro Tuesday afternoon. The win against Greensboro gets the Bulldogs off to a good start as The Citadel begins a home stand that spans four days, hosting five opponents. After taking a quick 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles from Daniel Dossetor and James Eason, Nick Medica and David Lara sealed the doubles point for the Cadets with an 8-5 victory over the Spartans' Jason Steinhorn and Ryan Lewis, giving The Citadel (5-3, 3-1 Southern Conference) the doubles point and the 1-0 lead in the match. Eason made it a 2-0 match as he quickly rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ian Conchar at No. 3 singles for his fifth consecutive singles victory and maintains a perfect 4-0 singles record in conference play. Eason has not lost a singles match since Feb. 17 when The Citadel dropped a 6-1 decision to Troy. Dossetor extended the lead to 3-0, pulling out the straight set victory over Marc Ladoucer of UNC Greensboro (2-9, 0-2 SoCon). After winning the first set 6-3, Dossetor trailed in the second set 4-3 before starting a rally that gave him the 7-5 victory. Ananda Sawmynaden recorded his second singles victory of the year with a 6-2, 6-3 win that sealed the overall match victory for the Bulldogs. His win was followed by UNCG's first point of the match as Jason Steinhorn defeated Nick Medica 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Martin King won in his first appearance of the year in dramatic fashion. At No. 6 singles, King took the 6-3 first set victory then fell 6-1 in the second set. In the final set, King led 3-2 then fell behind, 4-3. Trailing by only one, King rallied to take the 6-5 lead then let momentum carry him over for the 7-5 victory. The Spartans recorded their second and final point of the day in a tumultuous match at No. 4 singles. David Lara took the first set, 6-2, then trailed most of the second set. Lara initiated a comeback that saw him tie the second frame at 6-6 before a long shot on the tiebreaker gave Austin Wilty the second set victory, 7-6 (6). Wilty then rode his momentum into the third frame for the 6-0 victory. Wilty's victory breaks Lara's four match winning streak; his first loss since Feb. 17.
