Davidson 7, Brown 6
DAVIDSON, N.C. ? On the strength of a five-run sixth and some pitching an escape artist would be proud of, the Davidson Wildcats brought an end to their nine-game losing streak by defeating Brown on Wednesday evening at Wilson Field, 7-6. Davidson improved to 11-14 with the win, while the Bears were left still searching for their first win of the 2006 season with a record of 0-11.
Brown collected 10 hits, drew 10 walks, was hit by three pitches and reached base on two errors for 25 base runners in the game. But Wildcat pitchers continually got out of some difficult situations, stranding 15 Bears on base, including two in seven of the nine innings. The Davidson defense also helped out as catcher Alex Entrekin nabbed three runners trying to steal while another Bear was gunned down at the plate by right fielder Blake Osborn.
Clinging to the one-run lead in the ninth, the Wildcats summoned senior closer Jay Heafner to the mound from his position at shortstop. After quickly retiring the first two batters, his control escaped him as he walked the next two batters, bringing Danny Hughes to the plate. Hughes was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs in the game to that point, but he went down swinging to end the game and give Heafner his sixth save of the year. The save was also the 23rd of his career, breaking the school record of 22 previously held by Brad Wanzenburg ’91.
With Brown holding a 4-2 lead in the sixth, Heafner drew a walk to start the inning, ending the evening for Bear starter Alex Silverman. Davidson then feasted on the Brown bullpen, beginning with an RBI double off the bat of junior Gregory Zage. Senior Alex Entrekin greeted another reliever with a single to tie the game at four. Three batters later, sophomore Hugh Eden broke the deadlock with an RBI single, which brought the fourth pitcher of the inning to the mound. With the bases loaded, senior Ronnie Shore hit a two-run double off the base of the fence in left-center, capping the five-run frame.
The Bears got a run back in the seventh on a two-out RBI double by Paul Christian. In the eighth, Devin Thomas drew a one-out walk and scampered to third on a single to right off the bat of Eric Larson. Thomas scored when the throw to third got away, putting Larson at second as the tying run. Reliever Rob Wilson got the second out on a grounder to second. Then Brown head coach Marek Drabinski got daring, sending Larson on a straight steal of home. The Wildcats were not caught flat-footed, however, as Entrekin tagged Larson for the third out.
Brown began the scoring with an RBI single by Jeff Dietz in the first to score Bryan Tews, who had reached on an error. Davidson tied the score in the fourth when Heafner hit a lead-off triple ? the first of his career in his 670th at-bat ? and came home on a grounder by Entrekin.
In the fifth, the Bears got solo homers from Hughes and Thomas for a 3-1 lead before the ’Cats clawed out a run in their half when Eden, who had doubled, scored from third on a wild pitch with two outs. Hughes provided an RBI single in the sixth for a brief two-run lead for Brown prior to the Davidson outburst in the bottom half.
Shore and Entrekin each had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Wildcat offense, while Eden also banged out a pair of hits while scoring twice.
Sophomore Brian Packey (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win while getting just one out during his stint.
Suffering the loss was reliever Anthony Vita (0-1) in his first appearance of the season as he allowed three runs on two hits and walk while retiring just one batter.
Davidson plays host to Southern Conference foe Georgia Southern this weekend for a three-game series beginning on Friday evening at 7 p.m. Brown completes its southern swing at Greensboro College tomorrow at 5 p.m.

UNC Greensboro 4, North Carolina A&T 3
GREENSBORO, NC ? Sean Snell’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning capped a four-run comeback as UNC Greensboro bested in-city rival North Carolina A&T, 4-3, Wednesday evening from First Horizon Park in downtown Greensboro.
Snell, who finished the game with two hits and a pair of RBIs, smacked a 1-2 pitch into centerfield to score Wes McCall with the game-winning run.
North Carolina A&T (11-16) scored all three of its runs in the top of the first inning to take the early advantage. Nick Mayo drew a walk to start the inning, stole second and eventually came around to score on an error on the Spartan infield. Patrick Oates and William Sunderland each recorded RBI groundouts on the infield to account for the other two runs.
The Spartans (10-16) scored a run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single through the left side off the bat of leftfield Roly Gonzalez. The Miami, FL native went 2-for-3 for his first two-hit performance of the season.
UNCG cut the deficit to a single run in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout from Snell. Wes McCall led off the frame with a double to leftfield and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from catcher Adam Deleo before Snell collected his first RBI of the night with a ground ball to the shortstop.
Greg Feltes tied the game a three runs apiece in the seventh inning on a groundout to first base. After Snell and Gonzales recorded back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners, Feltes laid down a bunt down the first base line, giving Snell enough time to race home with the equalizer.
UNCG needed some two-out magic in the eighth inning to take the lead for good. After the first two outs had been recorded, McCall and David Adams registered singles before Snell picked up the Spartans’ third straight single to put UNCG ahead by a run.
Senior Patrick Currin pitched the ninth to record his second save of the season and extend his scoreless streak to 9-1/3 innings.
Ryan Clear (1-3) picked up his first win of the season after allowing no runs and one hit in an inning on the hill. Left-hander Clay Gibson was brilliant on the hill for the Spartans in relief of starter Greg Martin, limiting the Aggies to no runs and just one hit while striking out five in 5-1/3 innings of mound duty.
Patrick Oates (2-4) took the loss for the Aggies after pitching all eight innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits with five punchouts.
UNCG returns to Southern Conference action this weekend when the Spartans travel to Charleston, SC for a three-game series with The Citadel. Game one between the Spartans and Bulldogs is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday evening from Riley Park.

Winthrop 7, The Citadel 1
Charleston, S.C. ? Senior shortstop Matt Repec gave No. 26 Winthrop an early 2-0 lead to pace the Eagles past The Citadel, 7-1, Wednesday night in Riley Park. Repec went 2-for-5 including a two-run home run in the first to give Winthrop their seventh straight win of the season. Freshman Sonny Meade drove in the lone Bulldog run to avoid the shutout.
Heath Rollins smacked a single to center with one out for Winthrop (22-5) in the first. Repec then stepped in and ripped a two-run homer over the left field wall for his third four-bagger of the season.
The Eagles struck again in the fourth and fifth innings. Repec beat out a slow roller to third for an infield single to lead off the fourth frame. A sac bunt off the bat of Tommy Lentz moved Repec over to second before Mitch Saum pushed a base hit through the left side to put runners on the corners with one out. Citadel first baseman Sonny Meade fielded a bunt by Nick Bly and tried to get the play at the plate, but Repec slid in safe at home to extend the Eagle lead to three. Mike Konstantly then tallied an RBI single to center to make it 4-0.
Rollins blasted a solo-shot to right for his second round-tripper of the year. The South Carolina transfer took Citadel starter Zach Brown deep to put the Eagles up, 5-0, in the fifth.
The Citadel (13-12) threatened in the fifth after Winthrop starter Ben Hildreth held the Bulldog offense to only one hit through the first four frames. Meade drew a lead-off walk before senior Matt Matulia and sophomore Matt Arnold both went down on strikes. Freshman Sid Fallaw and senior Tripp Cappelmann then registered back-to-back singles to load the bases on two outs. Hildreth caught senior Trent Weathers swinging to end the inning and preserve the five-run lead.
The Dogs did manage to avoid the shutout as they pushed one across the plate in the sixth. Brown dropped one into right field and then scored from first on a double down the right field line by Meade. The Eagles tacked on a couple more runs in the eighth and ninth. Chris Carrara laced an RBI-single to right center for one in the eighth as Saum drilled an RBI-double down the left field line to give the Eagles a 7-1 advantage going into the bottom of the ninth.
The Citadel got two on with one out before Winthrop brought in closer Jonathan Settle, who registered a strikeout and a groundout to make the final, 7-1.
Freshman hurler Ben Hildreth (3-1) was credited with the win as he started his first game as an Eagle. Hildreth tossed five and two-thirds frames, giving up only one run on five hits and striking out four. Brown (1-3) suffered the loss as he took to the mound to face his second ranked opponent of the season.
The junior went five innings, allowing five runs on nine hits and fanning three.
The Dogs are now 1-3 versus ranked opponents this season as they upset No. 3 Nebraska, 8-5, in Riley Park on Feb. 18. The Cadets and Eagles will play each other again in Rock Hill, S.C. on May 3.
Next up, The Citadel will return to Southern Conference action as they play host to UNC Greensboro for a three-game set this weekend, March 31-April 2. Coastal Carolina 7, Georgia Southern 4
STATESBORO, Ga. ? Greg Dowling recorded a season-high four hits, his 14th multi-hit game this year, but Georgia Southern fell short in its comeback losing 7-4 to Coastal Carolina Wednesday at J.I. Clements Stadium. The Eagles (13-14 overall) had the tying run at the plate or the go-ahead runs on base in the final three innings.
Coastal jumped on the board in the first thanks to two errors. Making his first collegiate start, Andrew Berroth walked leadoff hitter Chris Raber. His throwing error on a bunt attempt by David Sappelt put runners on second and third. Second baseman Brett Pelfrey bobbled a grounder allowing the first run to score.
Berroth got a strikeout then a 5-4-3 ground ball double play to end the Chanticleers’ threat. In the second, Coastal (11-15) used a solo home run by Derek Martin and RBI double from Raber to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Eagles put the leadoff runner on in the first and second inning but both were erased on a ground ball double play. In the fourth, Dowling jumped into a share of the team home run lead, hitting his third which cut the deficit to 3-1.
With one out in the fifth, Mike Fuentes lined a RBI single off relief pitcher Matt Shurley then later Dom Duggan hit a grounder with the bases loaded. He beat the throw to first as another run scored.
Chris Shehan lined a leadoff double to start the sixth. He advanced to third on Dowling’s single then scored on Jeremiah Parker’s RBI double. Griffin Benedict grounded out to short but Dowling was able to score, making it a 5-3 game.
Georgia Southern stranded nine runners, including one in the seventh. Pelfrey lined a leadoff single and took second when Brant Peacher bobbled the ball. John Mariotti entered the game. He struck out the first two batters he faced and got a lineout to end the Eagles’ threat.
Parker drew a one-out walk in the eighth. Benedict dropped a double down the left field line to put the tying runs in scoring position. Mike Economos hit a sacrifice fly, cutting Coastal’s lead to 5-4. David Richardson pushed the count full before walking. However, Pelfrey fouled out to the third baseman ending the inning.
DJ Burns reached on an error to start the ninth, chasing Shurley. Pelfrey made up for his error by starting a double play. However, David Cogswell walked Peacher then Mariotti, who hit for himself, slammed a 2-run shot to deep centerfield.
The Eagles staged a two-out rally in the ninth. Shehan drew a walk then Dowling singled up the middle. However, Parker grounded out to end the game.
Berroth (0-1) gave up just three hits in 4.1 innings but was charged for four runs (three earned). He issued four walks and fanned three. Shurley pitched 3.2 innings, allowing only one run on four hits. Benedict joined Dowling with a multi-hit game, finishing with two. The Eagles out-hit Coastal 11-8.
Andy DeLaGarza (1-5) picked up his first win, allowing three runs on nine hits in six innings. Mariotti walked three but gave up just two hits while earning his second save. David Anderson and Fuentes had two hits apiece.
