McDaniel and Meszaros Grab Weekly Baseball Honors

SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference today named Western Carolina’s Trey McDaniel the league’s baseball Player of the Week, while College of Charleston’s Danny Meszaros was tabbed as the conference’s Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week.

In five games last week McDaniel batted .733 (11-for-15) with three home runs, 13 runs scored and 12 RBIs.  The junior first baseman from West Columbia, SC, recorded a 1.400 slugging percentage and had an .840 on-base percentage.  McDaniel drew nine walks on the week, including five in Sunday’s 20-10 win over Wofford and was also hit by a pitch.  He opened the week with a 3-for-5 outing with three RBIs in a win over Hartford, then concluded the week by going 8-for-9 with nine runs and eight RBIs in the Catamounts’ three-game sweep of the Terriers.

The Cougars’ Meszaros registered the league’s first complete game shutout in conference play this season by tossing a six-hitter in a 5-0 win over UNC Greensboro on Saturday.  The right-handed hurler from Boca Raton, FL, struck out a career-best 12 and walked only one in the Cougars’ first complete game shutout in two years that spanned 125 games. In his last two starts Meszaros has fanned 22 batters in 15.1 scoreless innings while giving up only nine hits.

Others considered for the Player of the Week award included The Citadel’s Chris Swauger (was 6-for-10 with five extra base hits against Georgia Southern), Elon’s Ryan Addison (hit .375 in five games last week), Furman’s Tony Maccani (batted .500 with eight RBIs and six runs scored), Georgia Southern’s Chris Shehan (hit .455 on the week and was 6-for-6 in series finale with Coppin State) and UNC Greensboro’s Brandon Harvey (game-winning walk-off home run against College of Charleston Friday).

Others considered for Pitcher of the Week were The Citadel’s Matt Crim (career-long 6.2 innings and fanned three in win over Georgia Southern), Elon’s Lance Cole (struck out six over 7.0 innings in win over Appalachian State), Furman’s Matt Klinker (career-high nine Ks in 7.0 inning outing versus Davidson), Georgia Southern’s Everett Teaford (struck out 12 batters over eight innings in win over The Citadel) and UNC Greensboro’s Patrick Currin (three outings of scoreless relief that spanned 8.1 innings).
