Furman 5, Georgia Southern 2

 

STATESBORO, Ga. - In sweeping the doubles sets and taking four out of the six singles flights, the Furman Paladins were able to get past Georgia Southern 5-2 Saturday (Mar. 25) on Hanner Courts.

The Eagles (5-9, 2-3 SoCon) sent both of their singles victories to three sets. Senior Vincent Patry (Paris, France/Lycee Jacques Monod) took the first set from FU’s Ben Pauluhn 6-1, but then dropped the second 4-6. Patry battled back to take the last set 7-6(4) and clinch the No. 1 spot. Freshman Joris De Weerdt (Mortsel, Belgium/Latin-Modern Languages) continued his good play from the No. 3 position. After losing the first set to Greg Maarschalk 3-6, De Weerdt used tie-breakers to take the second 7-6(8), and the third 1-0(7). This was De Weerdt’s sixth straight singles victory. He leads the team overall with seven.

Doubles play saw the Eagles fall 8-4 in the first flight, 8-0 in the second and 8-1 in the third.

Georgia Southern will look to rebound from this conference loss when they travel to North Carolina next weekend to take on the Phoenix of Elon on Saturday (April 1) and UNC Greensboro on Sunday (April 2).

College of Charleston 6, Appalachian State 1

BOONE, N.C. ? The Mountaineers’ five-matching winning streak came to an end Saturday, as the Appalachian State University men’s tennis team fell to the College of Charleston, 6-1, in Southern Conference play at the Yonahlossee Racquet Club.

With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 7-6 overall and 0-4 in SoCon play. The Cougars improve to 15-1 overall and 6-0 in league play, extending their winning streak to 15 matches.

The College of Charleston captured the doubles point with come-from-behind victories at all three positions. The CofC team of Or Dekel and Marcos Digliodo overcame a 5-2 deficit to defeat ASU’s Alex Probst (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Ryan Brookshaw (Pretoria, South Africa) at No. 1 doubles.

Brookshaw saw his singles winning streak snapped at six matches with a 6-3, 7-5 loss to Digliodo at the No. 2 position.

Senior Andrew Taylor (Parkland, Fla.) picked up his first Southern Conference win of the season with ASU’s lone point of the evening. Taylor took down Ashok Bamachandra, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 5 position. Taylor is now 7-5 on the season in singles play.

After winning the first set, 6-4, senior Andrew Waters (Durban, South Africa) suffered a heartbreaking loss, falling to Omer Abramovich, 4-6, 6-3 (10), at No. 4.

The Mountaineers remain at home as they host High Point in non-conference action, Monday, March 27 at 2:30 p.m. at the ASU Stadium Tennis Courts.

GREENSBORO, NC ? UNC Greensboro and Chattanooga split the six singles matches, but Chattanooga won all three doubles’ pro-sets to slip past the Spartans, 4-3, in Southern Conference men’s tennis action on Saturday afternoon.

 

UNCG got singles wins from Marc Ladouceur, Martin Redelinghuys and Jason Steinhorn, while Chattanooga’s Mark Funn, Madr Bouabdellah and Razvan Axente recorded singles wins for the Mocs. The Mocs, however, opened the afternoon by winning all three doubles matches and that wound up being the difference.

 

UNCG returns to action on Monday when it travels to Davidson for a 2 pm SoCon match.
