Wofford 4, Appalachian State 3

 

Wins from the bottom three positions coupled with a thrilling triumph at the No. 1 slot in singles play were enough to give the Wofford women's tennis team a 4-3 Southern Conference victory over Appalachian State Saturday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center in Spartanburg, S.C.

The Mountaineers claimed an early 1-0 lead in the contest by winning the doubles point. The Terriers were able to garner an 8-2 triumph at the No. 1 doubles seed as seniors Tara Hartness and Ellen Rogers posted the win against Frances Blanton and Monica Tomas.

Rogers also earned a victory in singles action, coming from behind to defeat Anja Gugger 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 during the No. 1 match. The win was the ninth of the season for the current TIAA-CREF SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week and also was the clinching contest.

Wofford then picked up triumphs at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles slots to clinch the victory. Freshman Ashley Page posted a 6-1, 6-1 decision against Salem Kirven at the No. 4 seed.

Sophomore Adriane Hodges tallied a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 5 position versus Lyndsey Free for her career-best and team-leading 10th victory of the campaign. She is the first Terrier, men's or women's, to garner double-digit wins this season.

Classmate Lauren Prickett registered a 6-3, 6-3 triumph versus Blanton during the No. 6 contest as she add to her career-best six victories.

With the win, the Terriers snap Appalachian State's five-match winning streak and improve their record to 9-7 overall and 3-1 in SoCon action. The Mountaineers drop to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in league play.

A weekend of home matches will conclude at Noon Sunday when Wofford hosts Georgia Southern at the Reeves Tennis Center.

Furman 7, Georgia Southern 0

 

Greenville, SC - The Furman Lady Paladins recorded their second straight shut out Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 win over the Lady Eagles of Georgia Southern. With the win Furman improved their record to 9-6, 4-0 in conference play, dropping Georgia Southern to 4-10, 1-3 in conference. The win was also the 65th straight regular season conference victory for the Lady Paladins.

Furman took the early 1-0 lead with wins in all three doubles matches. The Lady Paladins used the early momentum to capture all six singles matches to secure the shut out. In flight one Laura Gioia downed Szilvia Zsakay 6-2, 6-2 while Marti Morris fought off a first set loss to win her flight two match over Molly Maddox 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-6. At No.3 Lauren Osborne hit her way to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Lauren Wolken and Shannon Moore downed Kim Wollett 6-4, 6-1 at No.4. In her flight five match Bonnie Baird cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Heather Reynolds and in the final match at No.6 Lauren Tomory posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Shea Huxtable.

The Lady Paladins return to action on Sunday with a noon match against Samford at the Mickel Tennis Center.

Davidson 5, Chattanooga 2

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Davidson ran its home unbeaten streak to seven straight with a 5-2 victory over the visiting Chattanooga Mocs in women's tennis action Saturday afternoon at the Knobloch Tennis Center. The Wildcats have won 19 of their last 20 home affairs as they improve to 11-5 overall and 3-0 in league play. With the loss, Chattanooga remains winless in the conference at 0-5 and falls to 6-10 on the season.

Despite dropping the top doubles match, the duos of Lindsey Powel/Michele Fanney and Kate Levitt/Lora Dushanova each recorded 8-3 victories to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 advantage in the dual. Entering this afternoon's match, Davidson was a perfect 10-0 when grabbing the doubles point.

Kim Whelan added to the scoring column for the Wildcats when she defeated Talita Bragato 6-4, 6-1 for her team-leading 11 victory of the season. Whelan's win was the first of four straight for Davidson to close out the match. Among those contributing to the Wildcat streak and points total were Levitt, Meredith Skeeters and Dushanova.

Chattanooga's only points came from Anastasia Zhukova and Lindsey Ballard, who knocked off Davidson's top seeds Kelsey Linville and Fanney respectively.

The Wildcats will travel to Charleston, S.C., tomorrow for a 1 p.m. match against Southern Conference rival College of Charleston. Davidson ended the Cougars season a year ago with 4-3 triumph in the semifinals of the Conference Tournament. Chattanooga will also be in SoCon play Sunday as it travels to play at UNC Greensboro.

GREENSBORO, NC ? UNC Greensboro swept five singles matches in straight sets on its way to a 7-0 win over Western Carolina in Southern Conference women’s tennis action on Saturday afternoon.

 

The Spartans got straight set wins from Emily Wade, Whitney Miles, Erica Zabkar, Lourdes Moran and Sophie Rychlik. Miles, Moran and Rychlik were dominant in their wins. Moran, a senior from Guayaquil, Ecuador, cruised past Holly Slocks, 6-1 and 6-0. Rychlik’s win was even easier as the senior from Lund, Sweden blanked Carley Abbott, 6-0 and 6-0. Miles, a sophomore from Atlanta, GA, also came away with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Susanna Sjokuist.

 

UNCG (6-9, 3-3 SoCon) hosts Chattanooga in another Southern Conference match-up on Sunday at 12 noon.
