Southern Conference Women's Tennis Results from Mar. 23

Appalachian State 6, Western Carolina 1

 

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina sophomore Trish Hanson scored her first singles victory in Southern Conference play on Thursday afternoon, but it wasn't enough as the Catamounts fell to rival, Appalachian State, 6-1, at the Catamount Athletic Complex. The loss denied Western's bid to win consecutive matches for the first time this season, while the victory was the Mountaineers fifth-in-a-row.

With Western conceding number three doubles, the Mountaineers took the early 1-0 lead in the match when the tandem of senior Lyndsey Free and junior Anja Gugger defeated Western's duo of sophomore Susanna Sjokvist and freshman Holly Stocks in straight sets, 8-0, at number two. At the number one slot, WCU's sophomore team Hanson and Mariona Trilla Jane broke the ASU serve and claimed an early 2-1 lead in their match. However, sophomore Frances Blanton and Monica Tomas won the next two for the Apps to claim their first advantage, 3-2, and would trade points back-and-forth before Appalachian's pair claimed the 8-5 win.

In singles action, with the sixth seed conceded by WCU, the Mountaineers claimed victory in the match with two, straight set victories at number four and five. Finishing first, Western's Abbott fell to Free at five, 6-0, 6-0, with Stocks dropping her match at number four to senior Salem Kirven by the same count.

Western (3-11, 0-4 SoCon) earned its lone victory on the day through the inspired play of Hanson, who defeated the Apps number one player, Tomas, 6-1, 6-2. Holding a 2-1 lead in the opening set, Hanson won four straight games to win, and then built a commanding 5-2 lead en route to the 6-2 finishing score in the second.

Rounding out singles play, third seeded Trilla Jane fell to senior Victoria Moody, 6-2, 6-0, with Sjokvist wrapping up action on the day with a 6-2, 6-1 loss at number two to Gugger.

The Catamounts return to action on Saturday, March 25, visiting UNC Greensboro in Southern Conference action. Western will host East Tennessee State in non-conference action on Sunday, March 26 at 1:30 pm at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

Furman 7, Wofford 0

Greenville, SC - The Furman women's tennis team shut out Wofford 7-0 Thursday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center. With the win Furman improved their record to 8-6, 3-0 in conference play and captured the Pinson Challenge Trophy for the second straight year. The trophy, named in honor of Bob Pinson, will be presented to the winner of the two school's women's tennis regular-season match for 15 years.

Furman jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after capturing all three doubles matches. Furman's No.1 team of Laura Gioia and Marti Morris defeated Tara Hartness and Ellen Rogers 8-3 while in flight two Jacqueline Eckert teamed with Lauren Osborne for an 8-4 victory over Adriane Hodges and Ashley Page. Playing at No.3 Lisa Bornt-Davis and Shannon Moore followed suit with an 8-1 win over Lauren Prickett and Cayley Witzig.

As singles play began Furman captured three quick matches to secure the Lady Paladin victory. At No.1 Laura Gioia downed Ellen Rogers while at No.3 Lauren Osborne ousted Cayley Wetzig both by a score of 6-3, 6-1. Playing in flight four Shannon Moore eased by Ashley Page 6-1, 6-0 giving Furman a 4-0 lead. Lady Paladin Marti Morris expanded the lead to 5-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tara Hartness in flight two. Furman went on to capture the last two matches to secure the shut out. In flight five Bonnie Baird fought off a first set loss to down Adriane Hodges 4-6, 6-1, 10-7 and in flight six Lauren Tomory defeated Lauren Prickett 7-5, 6-1.

 

 

 


The Lady Paladins return to action on Saturday as they play host to Georgia Southern at 1:00 PM.

College of Charleston 4, Morehead State 1

The College of Charleston men's and women's tennis teams earned victories this afternoon as the men's team defeated Morehead State 5-0, while the women's team earned the 4-1 win over the Eagles at the tennis center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

The Cougars win their 14th in a row to go to 14-1 on the year, while the women improve to 9-7 overall.

The Charleston men's team dropped number two doubles but won at number one and three to take the doubles point heading into singles play. Charleston was able to take four singles matches in straight sets and clinch the 5-0 win before rain left the number five and six singles unfinished.

The Charleston women opened the match with a loss of the doubles point, falling at number one and two, while picking up the 8-2 win at number three. Charleston was able to rebound and take the straight set wins at number one, three, four, and five to clinch the win. Chelsea Albertz played at number one and defeated Mariana Weschenfelder, 6-3 and 7-5, at number one before rains came in and ended the rest of the match.

The College of Charleston men's team travels to Appalachian State Saturday, March 25th for a 1:00 PM match, while the women's team hosts Davidson, Sunday, March 26th at 10:00 AM. The Eagles host Eastern Illinois Friday, March 31st.
