East Carolina 4, UNC Greensboro 3

GREENVILLE, NC ? UNC Greensboro’s Martin Redlinghuys, Ryan Lewis and Jason Steinhorn all picked up singles victories, but East Carolina matched it and won two of the three doubles’ pro-sets to edge the Spartans, 4-3, in men’s tennis action Wednesday afternoon.

Redlinghuys earned a three-set win over Aleksey Kochetov, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. Lewis and Steinhorn both had an easier time of it. Lewis won in straight sets over Brian Walters, 6-4 and 7-5, while Steinhorn topped Britton Steele in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-1.

However, Kochetov and Ricardo Barone topped Redlinghuys and Austin Wilty at No. 1 doubles in a tiebreaker for what wound up being the deciding point.

UNCG returns to action on Saturday at 1 pm when it hosts Chattanooga in a Southern Conference match-up.

Furman 7, Wofford 0

Greenville, SC - The 67th ranked Furman Paladins opened their Southern Conference schedule with a 7-0 win over Wofford Wednesday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center. With the win the Paladins evened their record at 9-9 dropping the Terriers to 6-8, 3-3 in conference play.

The Paladins got off to a quick start, picking up wins in all three doubles matches. At No.1 Ben Pauluhn teamed with Greg Maarschalk for an 8-6 victory over Chris Barlow and Andrew Stubbs while fellow Paladins Brian Crook and Bo Ladyman defeated Michael Barber and Alex Fridzon 8-5 in flight two. In the flight three match Furman tandem Andy Juc and Scott Kahler downed Scott Collins and Jeff Muthig 8-6.

After capturing the 1-0 advantage, the Paladins picked up three quick singles victories to seal the match. In flight four Bo Ladyman downed Scott Collins 6-1, 6-2 while Daniel Knause hit his way past Richard Cahi 6-0, 6-2 at No.5. In the flight six match Chris Gilli eased by Michael Barber 6-0, 6-1. With the match in hand, the Paladins added three more singles victories to complete the shut out. At No.1 Ben Pauluhn defeated Andrew Stubbs 6-2, 6-4 and Andy Juc won his flight two match over Chris Barlow 6-4, 6-2. In the final match Greg Maarschalk fought through a second set tie-breaker for a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory over Alex Fridzon.

The Paladins travel to Statesboro, Ga. On Saturday for a 1:00 PM match against Southern Conference foe Georgia Southern.

Morehead State 4, Georgia Southern 3

STATESBORO, Ga. - After winning four of its last five matches, the Georgia Southern men’s tennis team was edged 4-3 by Morehead State Wednesday afternoon on Hanner Courts.

Georgia Southern (5-8, 2-2 SoCon) split singles play with Morehead State, however failed to capture the doubles point for the second straight match. Freshmen Joris De Weerdt (Mortsel, Belgium/Latin-Modern Languages) and Daniel Harden (Columbus, Ga./Hardaway) were the only Eagle pair to win, coming away with a 9-7 decision over Morehead’s Marty Dorchich and Luis Orieux at No. 3.

Head coach Justin Miles re-iterated the fact: “We played well overall, just got off to a slow start in doubles,” he said.

Georgia Southern’s singles victories came at the No. 2, 3 and 6 spots, as freshmen Philip Prins (Cape Town, South Africa/Rondebosch), De Weerdt, and Jakub Hanusz (Stola Wola, Poland/Zespol School) all won in straight sets. De Weerdt was perfect on the day, winning both of his matches.

The Eagles will return to Southern Conference action on Saturday, (Mar. 25) when they host Furman University at 1 p.m. on Hanner Courts. Georgia Southern will play five of its remaining seven matches against Southern Conference opponents.
