BOONE, N.C. ? The Appalachian State University women’s tennis team improved its winning streak to four matches as it defeated Morehead State, 7-0, Monday at the Yonahlossee Racquet Club.
With the win ASU improves to 8-2 on the season, while MSU drops to 2-11 overall. The Mountaineers completed their fourth sweep of the season, winning all three doubles matches for the doubles point and all six singles points.
Sophomore Frances Blanton (Raleigh, N.C.) improved to 6-1 in singles play this season with a 10-4 win over Heather Butt at the No. 6 position. She teamed up with freshman Monica Tomas (Valado De Frades, Portugal) to defeat Mariana Weschenfelder and Leah Lobnitz, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles. Tomas defeated Fernanda Chiaparini, 6-2, 7-6 (2) at No. 2 singles.
Senior Victoria Moody (Irmo, S.C.) improved her record to 8-2 with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Laura Ferreira at No. 3 singles. She teamed with classmate Salem Kirven (Greensboro, N.C.) in an 8-2 win over Megan Sammons and Butt at No. 3 doubles. Kirven also garnered a 10-2 victory over Lobnitz in singles play.
Junior Anja Gugger (Cary, N.C.) and senior Lyndsey Free (Marietta, Ga.) also each earned two wins on the evening. The two teamed up to defeat Ferreira and Chiaparinina, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles. Gugger defeated Weschenfelder, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, while Free picked up a 10-5 win over Sammons at No. 5.
The Mountaineers return to Southern Conference action, as they head to Cullowhee, N.C. and Spartanburg, S.C., to take on Western Carolina Thursday, March 23 and Wofford, Saturday, March 25. Thursday’s match will begin at 2 p.m., while Saturday’s is set for 1 p.m.
