SoCon Baseball Weekly Award Winners Named

SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference today named Western Carolina’s Steven Strausbaugh the league’s baseball Player of the Week, while College of Charleston’s Danny Meszaros was tabbed as the conference’s Pitcher of the Week.

 

After opening the week with an 0-for-4 performance at Georgia, the Catamounts’ Strausbaugh concluded the week by hitting .538 (7-for-12) in the team’s three-game sweep of Princeton.  The sophomore outfielder finished the week hitting .438 (7-for-16) with five runs scored, six RBIs and six extra base hits (four doubles, one triple and one home run).  Strausbaugh, who also drew three walks and was hit once, put together three multiple hit games versus the Tigers, including three two-baggers in the series finale.  He racked up a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .550 on-base percentage.

 

The Cougars’ Meszaros registered a career-high 10 strikeouts over 6.1 innings in the College of Charleston’s 2-0 win over Appalachian State on Sunday.  He walked only two and scattered three hits to move to 3-0 on the year.

Others considered for the Player of the Week award included Elon’s Chris Price (hit .381 with two HRs and six RBIs in a 5-0 week for the Phoenix), Georgia Southern’s Matt Miller (was 8-for-10 with two runs in a pair of losses at Troy), UNC Greensboro’s Jermaine Mitchell (.hit .471 with five RBIs and three multi-hit games) and Wofford’s John Brandt (6-for-9 with three RBIs against IPFW).

Others considered for Pitcher of the Week were Elon’s Chris Tilley (1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in three appearances that covered 4.2 innings), UNC Greensboro’s Wes McCall (struck out seven and allowed two runs on four hits in 7.0 innings of work in win over Albany), Western Carolina’s Greg Holland (struck out a career-high seven in 4.1 innings of relief against Princeton) and Wofford’s Austin Redwine (career-high 11 strikeouts in 6.1 innings in win against IPFW).
