College of Charleston 6, Elon 1
The College of Charleston took five of six singles matches and swept the doubles to defeat the Elon Phoenix in men's tennis, 6-1, this afternoon at the tennis center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
Elon drops to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the Southern Confernece while the Cougars win their 13th in a row to go to 13-1 and a perfect 5-0 in the league.
Charleston won the doubles point with the 8-2, 8-6 and 9-7 wins at number one, two and three doubles, respectively, to pick up the point.
Four of the six singles matches went into three sets with the Cougars taking three of them to clinch the 6-1 win. Omer Abramovich fell to Gustaf Asplund 6-5, 6-7, 6-2 at number four singles. Justin Malina improved his record to 12-0 on the year with the 7-6, 6-3 win over Sebastian Bredburg at number three.
The Cougars host Morehead State Thursday, March 23rd ar 3:30 to wrap up its 12-match home stand. Elon travels to Wofford Monday, March 20th for a 2:00 match.
Georgia Southern 4, Gardner-Webb 3
STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern men’s tennis team used straight set victories from the 1 thru 3 singles positions and two strong doubles wins to defeat Gardner-Webb 4-3, Sunday, (Mar. 19) at Hanner Courts.
“We played extremely well and had a lot of energy in doubles play,” head coach Justin Miles said.
The Eagles (5-7, 2-2 SoCon) began the afternoon by seizing the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Senior Vincent Patry (Paris, France/Lycee Jacques Monod) and freshman Philip Prins (Cape Town, South Africa/Rondebosch) set down GWU’s Taylor Ferrier and Gabe Veiga 8-1 at No. 1, and freshmen Jakub Hanusz (Stola Wola, Poland/Zespol School) and Neil Shine (Augusta, Ga./Augusta Prep) defeated Kim Ellis and Brad Clinard 8-3 at No. 2.
The Bulldogs and Eagles split singles play in half as Gardner-Webb took matches 4 thru 6, while Georgia Southern won matches 1 thru 3. Freshman Joris De Weerdt (Mortsel, Belgium/Latin-Modern Languages) upended Ferrier 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3, while Patry and Prins stayed perfect on the day, winning their respective 1 and 2 singles matches 6-1, 7-5 and 6-0, 6-1. The clinch point was decided as Patry was able to get past GWU’s Roberto Vasques in an extended second set.
GSU returns to action this Wednesday, (Mar. 22) as they play host to Morehead State at Hanner Courts. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
