TEGA CAY, SC - Samantha Widmer shot a final round 70 to help Elon capture the Shamrock Invitational for the second straight year. The Phoenix held off Winthrop to win the event by two strokes.
Elon combined to shoot a final round 300 as Widmer was joined by Taylor Johnson, Kelly Baytos, and Danielle Mills as each shot rounds in the 70s.
Johnson shot 78 and finished tied for third. Baytos shot a final round of 76 to finish 12th and Mills shot 76 to finish 19th. With her round of 2-under par, Widmer won the medalist by two strokes over Amy Loughney of Bucknell.
Winthrop came up a little short, despite a 73 from sophomore Jutta Degerman.
Sarah Hester and Jenny Brake each shot 76 and finished in a tie for third place. Brittany Dabule shot a 77 and finished in a tie for 7th place and A.J. Cunningham shot 80 to finished tied for 35th. Brake recorded one of the two eagles on the weekened as she scored a three on the opening hole, a 452-yard par 5.
The conditions were better on Sunday than the previous two rounds as the stroke average dropped from 87.88 in Saturday's rounds to 85.38 in Sunday's final round. A total of 22 players shot rounds in the 70s on Sunday compared to just 24 over the first two days.
Bucknell finished in a tie for third with Longwood followed by Kennesaw State, High Point, Gardner-Webb, Jackson State, Appalachian State, The Citadel, Radford, St. Francis (PA) and St. Mary's College (IN).

ROCK HILL, SC - The Citadel golf team placed 10th out of 13 teams in the Shamrock Intercollegiate at Tega Cay Golf Club in Rock Hill, S.C. The Bulldogs improved their score by six strokes from the second round to pass St. Francis in the tournament and moved up a spot in the field for the second straight day.
The Citadel fired a total of 337 in the third and final round at Tega Cay, their best score of the three-day tournament. Radford and St. Francis tied for 11th with a total of 1042, seven strokes behind the Bulldogs. St. Mary's finished in 13th with a total of 1051 while Appalachian State placed ninth with a mark of 1020, 15 shots ahead of The Citadel.
Seniors Tracy Hancock and Kayla Bowsher led The Citadel individually on the final day, as they each fired an 83. It was the 13th time in 21 rounds that Bowsher has tied for or had the best score on the squad this season and the sixth time in nine tournaments she has fired the best total mark on the Bulldogs.
Senior Kelley Thorsen had her best score of the tournament with an 85, while freshman Brittany Nagel fired an 86 for the second straight day to tie for her best round of the spring season.
Freshman Kasey Owens and Elizabeth Penn-Sanders as well as sophomores Maggie Dunning and Samantha Hamil also competed. Hamil achieved her best score of the tournament in the third round.
Fellow Southern Conference member Elon won the tournament for the second straight year with a total of 934, two strokes over host Winthrop. The Eagles finished 35 strokes ahead of third-place Bucknell and Longwood. Kennesaw State, High Point, Gardner-Webb and Jackson State finished fifth through eighth respectively.
The Citadel will be in action once again at the High Point Spring Intercollegiate April 3-4.
