GREENSBORO, N.C. ? The Appalachian State University women’s tennis team won all nine matches on its way to a 7-0 sweep of North Carolina A&T Thursday, at the Aggie Tennis Center.
With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 6-2 on the season, and remain a perfect 1-0 in Southern Conference play.
Senior Victoria Moody (Irmo, S.C.) improved to 7-1 in singles play this season with a 6-1, 6-2, defeat of Kathryn Jackson at No. 2 singles. She and teammate Salem Kirven (Greensboro, N.C.) moved to 5-1 in doubles play with an 8-0 win over Shannon Pittman and Terika Palmer at No. 3 doubles. Kirven also picked up a win at No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Deandra Bailey.
Junior Anja Gugger (Cary, N.C.), senior Lyndsey Free (Marietta, G.a), sophomore Frances Blanton (Raleigh, N.C.) and freshman Monica Tomas (Valado De Frades, Portugal) each added two wins on the day.
Gugger defeated Christine Ruffin, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles and teamed up with Free to defeat Tracy Ross and Bailey, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. Free defeated Pittman, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.
Tomas and Blanton teamed up for their first win at No. 1 doubles, an 8-1 defeat of Ruffin and Jackson. Tomas picked up her singles win with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ross at No. 4, while Blanton defeated Palmer, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
The Mountaineers return to Southern Conference action as they travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., to take on the Lady Mocs of Chattanooga, Sunday, March 19 at noon.
