College of Charleston 5, American 2
The College of Charleston took four of six singles matches to clinch the 5-2 win over American in men's tennis action this afternoon at the tennis center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
The Cougars win their 12th in a row to go to 12-1 on the year, while American falls to 4-6 overall.
The Cougars swept the doubles play to earn the point heading into singles play, with the closest match a 8-6 win by Or Dekel and Marcus DiGliodo over Juancarlo Vazquez at number one. The other two matches were 8-4 decisions.
American took number four and five singles in three sets, but Charleston rebounded with wins at numbers one, two, three and six. Justin Malina, playing at number three, took the easy 6-1, 6-1 win over Sebastien Proisy to earn his 11th straight win and went to 11-0 this season, remaining the only Cougar to still be undefeated in singles action.
The Cougars host Elon Sunday, March 19th at 1:30 in SoCon action. It is Parents' weekend for the Cougars as well. American travels a short distance to Charleston Southern Saturday, March 18th for a 12:00 match.
The Citadel 6, Bucknell 1
Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel rebounded from their loss to Marquette with a 6-1 thumping of the Bucknell Bison Thursday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center. The Bulldogs edged the Bison to win the doubles point and used that momentum during the singles matches to carry them to victory.
The Cadets (9-7, 4-2 Southern Conference) quickly went ahead win the doubles portion as Daniel Dossetor and James Eason recorded a 8-4 win over the Bison tandem of Ira Reibeisen and Asher Salem at No. 1 doubles. Bucknell (3-6) tied the doubles point with a close 9-8 (3) win at No. 2 doubles as Ryan Sandburg and John Lashnits topped The Citadel's David Lara and Nick Medica. The Citadel captured the doubles point as Derek Jose and Ananda Sawmynaden rallied to take an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles over Matt Pikus and Jonathan Brenner.
After an inspiring speech by head coach Toby Simpson intended to rally the troops after the doubles portion, The Cadets came out during the singles motivated to win. James Eason started The Citadel off with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win as he rebounded after his first loss since Feb. 17 yesterday. Daniel Dossetor put the Bulldogs up 3-0 as he defeated Reibeisen, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.
Brenner put the Bison on the board as he recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over Derek Jose, but it was too little too late as David Lara sealed the match win for the Dogs with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles over Bucknell's Matt Pikus.
Nick Medica scored his first win since March 7 with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, facing Bucknell's Sandburg. Sawmynaden closed out the match with a 7-6 (4), 5-7, 10-7 super tiebreaker win at No. 2 singles over Asher Salam.
The Bulldogs say goodbye to South Carolina and "Aloha!" to Hawaii as The Citadel heads to the 50th state for two matches. The Cadets will face Wisconsin-Green Bay on March 20 at 2 p.m. (Hawaii time) and will face BYU-Hawaii on March 21 at 2 p.m. (Hawaii time). The Bison head to Virginia where Bucknell will face Richmond at 10 a.m., on Sunday, March 19.
