Georgia Tech 7, Furman 0

 

Greenville, SC - The 8th ranked Georgia Tech women's tennis team shut out Furman 7-0 Wednesday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center. With the win the Yellow Jackets improved to 11-2, dropping the Lady Paladins to 7-6 on the year.

In doubles play Georgia Tech quickly won the flight three match with Kacie Anson and Alison Silverio downing Lisa Bornt-Davis and Lauren Tomory 8-4. Furman answered with a win in flight two with Lauren Osborne and Jacqueline Eckert upsetting Georgia Tech's 47th ranked team of Whitney McCray and Kelly Anderson 9-8(6). Georgia Tech secured the doubles point with a win at No.1. The 12th ranked duo of Kristi Miller and Lyndsay Shosho defeated Furman's 28th ranked team of Laura Gioia and Marti Morris 9-8(3). Georgia Tech went on to win all six singles matches to secure the 7-0 shut out.

Furman returns to action on Thursday, March 23 when they play host to Wofford at 3:00 PM.

Davidson 7, Northern Colorado 0

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- For the second straight match and fourth time this year, the Davidson women's tennis team blanked its opponent, Northern Colorado this time, on its way to a 7-0 win on Wednesday afternoon at Covington Courts. The Wildcats improved to 8-4 with the non-conference win, while Northern Colorado fell to 5-7 overall. Davidson also moved its home record to a perfect 6-0 in dual matches this year.

Davidson easily swept the doubles point, led by the sophomore tandem of Kelsey Linville and Kim Whelan, who defeated Meredith Krystofik and Christian Shelly, 8-3, at number one doubles. It was the duos eighth doubles win of the season.

The Wildcats then proceeded to take all six singles spots, winning for the second straight match in straight sets at each spot. Whelan earned her team-leading eighth singles win of the year with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Renee Nuccio at the number three singles position.

Freshman Emily Wilkinson gave up only one game in her straight set 6-1, 6-0 win over Tonya Bunting at number six singles, while Linville and sophomore Meredith Skeeters did the same in only giving up a single game in their wins at the number one and four singles positions. The win for Wilkinson was her fifth of the season as she improved to 5-1 overall.

Davidson looks to continue its home success when the Wildcats play host to East Carolina in a dual match set for Friday, Mar. 17 at 2 p.m.

College of Charleston 6, Southern Illinois 1

The College of Charleston women's tennis team used five victories in singles play to take the 6-1 win over Southern Illinois in action this afternoon at the tennis center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

The Cougars improve to 6-7, while SIU drops to 2-4 on the year.

Charleston won the doubles point to start the match with wins at number one and two doubles. The Cougars took all but number five singles to claim the 6-1 win. Kelsey Darnell was the only casualty at singles, falling to Zoya Honarmand, 6-2, 6-0. The closest match of the day proved to be at number one where Maxine Capewell was able to pull out the 7-5, 2-6 (10-8) win.

Charleston steps back into conference play, taking on UNC Greensboro March 18th at 10:00 AM. Southern Illinois travels to Memphis that Saturday, as well, for a 10:00 AM match.
