Wofford 4, Davidson 3
DAVIDSON, N.C. ? The Davidson men's tennis team fell to 1-3 in Southern Conference play with a close 4-3 loss to visiting Wofford on Wednesday afternoon at Covington Courts. The loss dropped the Wildcats overall record to 7-6, while the Terriers picked up their second straight conference win to improve to 3-2 in league play and 6-6 overall.
Sophomore Flaviu Simihaian (Nasaud, Romania) and freshman Ethan Jaffee (Indianapolis, Ind.) teamed up at number one doubles to help the Wildcats secure the doubles point with an 8-2 win over Chris Barlow and Andrew Stubbs for the Terriers. The doubles win snapped Simihaian and Jaffee's two-match losing streak as the duo improved to 3-4 at number one doubles. The team of senior Joe Cheaney (Atlanta, Ga.) and sophomore Phillip Compeau (Wilkesboro, N.C.) sealed the point by taking an 8-6 decision from Jeff Muthig and Scott Collins at number three doubles.
Jaffee then continued his strong play in singles action, earning his team-leading ninth singles win of the season with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alex Fridzon. But, the Wildcats were only able to secure one more point in singles play when freshman Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) won at number six singles over Michael Barber 6-1, 6-1, as Wofford earned wins at number one, two, four, and five singles for the 4-3 win. Myers win was his sixth at the number six singles spot this year.
Davidson will now see if they can stop No. 22 ranked N.C. State when the Wolfpack come visiting Covington Courts this Saturday, Mar. 18 at 5 p.m. The Wolfpack sit at 14-3 overall.
College of Charleston 6, Chattanooga 1
The College of Charleston men's tennis team earned its 11th win in a row and remained undefeated in SoCon play as it defeated Chattanooga, 6-1, in action this afternoon at the tennis center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
The Cougars improve to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the Southern Conference, while the Mocs drop to 9-6 and 1-3.
Charleston took two of three doubles matches to earn the double point and took that one-point advantage into singles play where the Cougars took five of six to win the match 6-1. The number four singles match was split 6-4, 3-6 in sets but UTC's Badr Bouabdellah took the victory after Cougar Omer Abramovich defaulted.
All the singles matches were close as most of the sets were won by the Cougars by either a 6-4 or 6-3 total. Mike Reynolds at number six singels provided the most drama, taking his match to three sets and winning 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.
The Mocs travel to Tennessee Martin Wednesday, March 22nd for a 2:00 match, while the Cougars host American at 1:00 Thursday at Patriots Point.
