College of Charleston 8, Charleston Southern 5
CHARLESTON, SC -- Alex Garabedian's two-run single in the top of the seventh broke a 5-5 tie and Tim McCarty pitched four shutout innings lifting the College of Charleston to an 8-5 victory over rival Charleston Southern before 111 at Buccaneer Field on Wednesday.
"We didn't play that well early in the game," said Pawlowski, whose team saw Charlotte build an 8-0 sixth-inning lead before pulling out a 10-8 win at Patriots Point Field on Tuesday. "But, we were able to regroup and win another ballgame."
The Cougars (14-4) trailed 4-0 in the fifth inning and 5-3 entering the seventh before rallying for their third straight win over Charleston Southern. Garabedian bounced a single into left center that scored Larry Cobb and Oliver Marmol for a 7-5 Charleston lead. Joey Friddle's RBI single in the eighth plated Michael Harrington for the final margin.
Chris Krogmeier's RBI double capped a three-run first inning for CSU (8-14), and his third inning two-out single to center scored Anthony Hayes for a 4-0 lead. After the Cougars climbed to within 4-3 with a three-run top of the fifth, Hayes belted his first homer of the season, a solo shot to left, in the bottom of the inning that stretched Charleston Southern's lead to 5-3.
Tim McCarty (1-0), a transfer from South Carolina, picked up the win in relief. McCarty blanked the Bucs on just two hits with three walks. Brandon Roberts (1-1) suffered the loss surrendering two runs on a hit and a walk in 1/3 of an inning.
Both Garabedian and Phillip Coker extended their hitting streaks to 18 games each. Wes Brundridge and Krogmeier paced CSU's 12-hit attack with three hits each.
The Cougars open Southern Conference play with a three-game series at Appalachian State beginning Friday.

UNC Asheville 6, Furman 5
ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Johnny Martinez’s pinch-hit two run single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted UNC Asheville to a 6-5 win over Furman in college baseball action at Greenwood Field Wednesday afternoon.
The victory went to reliever Ben Buchanan (1-4) who pitched out of trouble in the ninth inning to earn his first victory of the season.
The Bulldogs (7-12) trailed 5-4 after the Paladins scored three times in the top of the eighth but Brett Robinson reached on an infield single. Elliott Arrington moved Robinson to third with a single to right-center.
Furman went to the bullpen and brought in left-hander Butch Pucteas to face Martinez. Arrington moved to second on a wild pitch. On the next pitch, Martinez singled to right field, scoring both runs easily and Asheville went in front, 6-5.
The Paladins (9-6) tried to rally in the ninth as with one out, Case Cassedy singled. Jay Jackson worked a walk to put runners on first and second.
A.J. Daviduk struck out but both runners moved up by stealing second and third. However, Buchanan got Joe Daysh to pop out to center field and end the game.
The Paladins trailed 4-2 entering the eighth but quickly tied the game on back-to-back home runs by Jay Jackson and Daviduk off reliever Chris White. Furman took the lead, 5-4 on a run-scoring double from catcher Tony Maccani.
Furman opened the scoring in the first on Cassedy’s sacrifice fly. The Bulldogs came back with three runs in the bottom of the first as Tony Campana scored on a passed ball and Kyle Smith delivered a two-run single to put Asheville on top, 3-1.
The Paladins cut the lead to 3-2 in third on a RBI-double from Cassedy. The Bulldogs came back and scored in the fourth on a run-scoring grounder from Steve Burnich.
Patrick Arnett took the loss for Furman and dropped to 1-3. Cassedy led the Paladins at the plate by going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Kyle Smith had two hits for the Bulldogs.
UNC Asheville hosts Hartford this Saturday in a doubleheader starting at Noon.

NC A&T 3, Appalachian State 2 (10 inn.)
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A two-out, infield single in the bottom of the 10th inning produced the game-winning run as Appalachian State University dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to North Carolina A&T on Wednesday night at War Memorial Stadium. The loss concluded a grueling two-game road trip for Appalachian (9-7), which included contests at Auburn and N.C. A&T on back-to-back evenings.
After starter Chad Antley failed to record an out in the top of the first, Appalachian’s bullpen held A&T (8-11) scoreless for 9.2 innings before the fluke run in the bottom of the 10th. Freshman Garrett Sherrill, ASU’s fourth reliever of the evening, got the Mountaineers out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth when he struck out the first two batters he faced to send the game to extra stanzas.
After the Apps went down in quietly in the top of the frame, Aggie left fielder Joe McIntyre led off the bottom half of the 10th with a single to right field off Sherrill. The right-hander battled back to strike out the next batter, but the third strike slipped past ASU catcher Adam Beasley to allow McIntyre to move into scoring position.
A ground ball to second pushed McIntyre to third base with two outs before Sherrill made a terrific 1-2 pitch to seemingly escape unscathed for the second-straight inning. However, A&T second baseman John Primus got just enough of Sherrill’s offering to roll it up the third base line for an infield single and bring McIntyre home from third with the winning run.
The tough-luck loss was the first of Sherrill’s career, as the rookie fell to 3-1 on the season. His effort, combined with outstanding performances out of the bullpen from sophomore Adam Mills (6.0 IP, 3 H, 5 K), freshman Zach Quate (2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 K) and senior Josh Fish (0.1 IP), were the key to the Mountaineers sending the contest to extra frames after falling into a 2-0 hole before even recording an out in the first.
Second baseman Ben Billingsley and designated hitter Kevin Butler keyed a late rally with back-to-back RBI hits that knotted the contest at 2-2 in the eighth. Butler drove in Billingsley after the freshman cut the deficit in half with a run-scoring triple to center field.
N.C. A&T starter Chris held ASU to just two runs on seven hits over seven innings of work and Kyle Harvey allowed just one hit and struck out three in 2.2 innings of relief to pick up his first win of the season.
Appalachian opens Southern Conference play and makes its first appearance of the season in Boone when it hosts two-time defending conference-champion College of Charleston this weekend at Red Lackey Field. The three-game series kicks off with a 3 p.m. matchup on Friday.

NC State 24, UNC Greensboro 3
RALEIGH, NC ? North Carolina State pounded out 21 hits and scored runs in each of the first six innings en route to a 24-3 win over the UNC Greensboro baseball team Wednesday evening at Doak Field.
NC State (19-4) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after one inning of play as the Wolfpack capitalized on an UNCG error charged to leftfielder Brandon Harvey. After Aaron Bates earned a two out walk, Brian Aragon skied a fly ball into leftfield which got caught in the gusting wind, preventing Harvey from making what normally would be considered a routine out. By the time
the ball hit the ground, Bates had already rounded third base and Aragon had scampered safely into second.
The Wolfpack tacked on another two runs in the second inning on an RBI groundout from Jonathan Diaz and a sacrifice fly courtesy of Matt Camp. NC State exploded for eight runs in the home half of the third inning, highlighted by two-run doubles from both Matt Mangini and Aaron Cone, to take an 11-0 lead.
Corona struck again in the bottom of the fourth, connecting for a three-run home run to centerfield as NC State extend its lead to 15-0. Diaz earlier plated Jon Still on an RBI fielder’s choice to account for the first run of the frame.
Sophomore catcher Adam Deleo put the Spartans (4-13) on the board in the top of the fifth with a lead off home run over the leftfield wall. It was his first roundtripper of the season and only his second career four-bagger in a UNCG uniform. Second baseman Greg Feltes produced UNCG’s second run of the inning with an RBI double off the left-centerfield wall to score Shane Thompson, who doubled before him. Jermaine Mitchell followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Feltes and extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
That was as close as UNCG would get as NC State answered with two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Drew Martin and an RBI double off the bat of Bobby Hubbard, leaving the score 17-3.
Corona finished the game 3-for-7 with five runs driven in for NC State. Matt Payne recorded his first win of the season after allowing three runs on six hits while striking out three and walking one in five innings of mound duty.
UNCG junior Ryan Clear (0-3) suffered the loss after surrendering four runs on one hit while striking out one and walking four in two plus innings on the hill.
Thompson led UNCG at the dish as the Wilmington, NC native went 3-for-4 on the afternoon in his first career start at UNCG. Feltes and Mitchell chipped in at the plate as the duo both collected two hits and an RBI.
The Spartans return to action Friday evening when UNCG welcomes Albany to UNCG Baseball Stadium for a three-game series. First pitch between the Spartans and Great Danes is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Georgia 11, Western Carolina 0
Athens, Ga. ? Western Carolina pitchers had only allowed six home runs through their first 14 games. However, the 20th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs, who scored five runs in the first inning, hit five homers Wednesday night en route to a 11-0 victory over the Catamounts at Foley Field. Georgia improves to 13-2, while Western drops to 6-9.
After Western attempted to take an early lead, with Barrett Shaft being out at the plate on a Trey McDaniel double in the top of the first, Georgia sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs on eight hits. Jonathan Wyatt, who reached on a one-out single, scored on an RBI double by Jason Jacobs. Josh Morris followed with a two-run home run to left. The Bulldogs then loaded the bases on three consecutive singles. Gordon Beckham plated Bobby Felmy with a single and Kyle Keen followed with an RBI fielder’s choice.
Georgia padded its advantage in the bottom of the third thanks to a double by Matt Robbins and a two-run home run by Keen.
To start the fourth, Morris hit his second blast of the game and sixth of the season to give Georgia an 8-0 cushion. In the fifth and after a one-out triple by Keen, Joey Side delivered two-run home run. In the sixth, the Bulldogs hit their fifth homer of the game when Felmy started the home half with a blast to right.
Georgia starter Nathan Moreau, high school teammate of Western’s Shaft, improved to 2-0 in the season, allowing four hits with no walks and four strikeouts over five complete. Caleb McConnell suffered the loss, falling to 0-2. He allowed 11 hits and seven runs over three innings.
Morris and Robbins led the way for Georgia, each getting three hits. Western’s Grey Gregory came through with two of his team’s five hits on the evening.
Western Carolina will open a nine-game home stand with a Saturday doubleheader versus Princeton, with first pitch set for 1:00 pm. Game two will be approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. The team will conclude the weekend set with a single game Sunday, starting at 1:00 pm.

Troy 6, Georgia Southern 2
TROY, Ala. ? Everett Teaford pitched Georgia Southern’s first complete game this season, however a six-run inning would be all the offense Troy needed. The Eagles dropped their sixth straight decision, losing 6-2 at Riddle-Pace Field Wednesday night (March 15).
Troy had scored in every inning the night before, however, Teaford kept the Trojans off the board in all but the decisive fifth. The junior left-hander gave Georgia Southern (9-12 overall) the pitching duration it greatly needed, recording his second career complete game. He scattered six hits, allowing six runs (five earned) while walking two and fanning eight. In the previous three games, the GS starter did not make it out of the fifth inning.
The Trojans (11-6), winning their ninth straight game, loaded the bases in the first with two outs but Teaford struck out Jared Keel swinging to end the frame.
In the fourth the Eagles could not capitalize on a golden opportunity against Jon Gianquitti, who had retired eight straight to that point. Matt Miller beat out his second infield hit of the game then Greg Dowling lined a single to center. Griffin Benedict walked on four pitches to load the bases with no outs. Chris Shehan struck out swinging then Derrick Smith hit into an inning-ending double play.
Troy got a leadoff single to start the fifth inning rally. Ian Craze put down a sacrifice bunt but Teaford’s throw into second was in the dirt and skirted into centerfield. Tom King hit a 3-run homer in the next at-bat. With one out, Keel hit another 3-run homer.
The Eagles got on the board in the sixth. Chris Hollis walked and Miller singled through the left side. Dowling lined a RBI single for the first run. Miller advanced to single on a double play ball then eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Teaford, who needed just eight pitches for a 1-2-3 second inning, retired the final 11 batters he faced in order. He moved into seventh place among the career strikeout leaders now at 273, needing two more to tie Scott Ryder for sixth.
Georgia Southern’s first three batters accounted for all the hits. Miller led the way again with three. Over the past three games he improved his streak to nine hits in his last 12. Dowling added two hits and Hollis contributed one.
Gianquitti struck out a career-high 11 batters in eight innings. Keel had two of the Trojans’ six hits.
The Eagles will enjoy a week off before returning to J.I. Clements next Tuesday (March 21) and Wednesday, hosting Coppin State in a 6 p.m. contest each night. It marks the final tune-ups before Southern Conference play begins on Friday, March 24 at home versus The Citadel.
