The Citadel 4, Chattanooga 3
Charleston, S.C. - Down 3-1 with their backs against the wall, the Bulldogs were facing their fourth consecutive loss before igniting an improbable rally that propelled The Citadel to a 4-3 win over Southern Conference foe Chattanooga Monday afternoon in Charleston.
The Citadel (8-6, 4-2 SoCon) dropped the doubles point as the Mocs nabbed wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. The Bulldog tandem of Daniel Dossetor and James Eason scored the only doubles win for The Citadel with an 8-7 (5) win over Chattanooga's Josh Bales and Mark Fynn. The Mocs fall to 9-5 (1-2 SoCon) on the year.
"The boys fought hard today," said head coach Toby Simpson. "They hung in there until the very end. They never gave up. I'm proud of their effort today."
UTC's Razvan Axente put the Mocs up 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Nick Medica at No. 5 singles. The Cadets responded with a strong 6-2, 6-2 victory by Daniel Dossetor at No. 1 singles, defeating Ryan Fitzgerald. UTC's Badr Bouabdellah moved to 12-2 on the season as he recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win over David Lara at No. 4 singles, giving the Mocs the 3-1 lead in the match.
Ananda Sawmynaden responded with a 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles to put the match at 3-2. James Eason won his 11th consecutive match after an unbelievable comeback at No. 3 singles. Eason dropped the first set to Chattanooga's Artyom Vlasenko and was down 5-2 in the second frame before winning 11 straight games to win his match, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0.
Following Eason's match, UTC was penalized a point, which was awarded to The Citadel's Derek Jose in the match-deciding competition at No. 6 singles. Jose led in the third set 5-4 and the point gave him the point lead, helping Jose sweep through the final game for the 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 victory. That win sealed the 4-3 match victory for The Citadel.
The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, March 15 as they host the Golden Eagles of Marquette out of the BIG EAST Conference in a 2 p.m. showdown.
